    Abstract: The past 20 years have witnessed major shifts in language and education policy in Malaysia. This reflects a range of social, economic, and political forces that influence and shape the policymaking in this multi-ethnic and multicultural country. Past research has suggested that language and education policies in Malaysia tend to have two main stances and are generally related to Malay (the national language), English, Mandarin, and Tamil. One stance is related to issues of globalization and employability, and the other is related to national and ethnic identities. In view of these stances, this paper seeks to contribute to the discussion and debates on these issues by empirically investigating inherent ideological positions in official statements published in two newspapers in the past 20 years.     Abstract: This paper examines code choices in the written linguistic landscape of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). Due to a history of language imposition, the Marshall Islanders have long been denied the opportunity to express their linguistic identity in the public domain. A recently proposed bilingual language policy, which requires all public signs to be Marshallese-English bilingual, aims to change this status quo. We map language choices in the linguistic landscape of the RMI at the cusp of this policy with an eye on the stakeholders, production processes, and audiences involved in the creation and reception of the linguistic landscape. State-of-the-art geographical and regression analyses model the factors that govern code choices in the linguistic landscape of the RMI. Our findings allow us to pinpoint niches - both geographical as well as social - where the Marshallese assert their linguistic identity in the public realm

    Abstract: In the literature, the impact of integration processes on language learning and usage is traditionally evaluated either through the prism of sociolinguistics or soft power. This article proposes a new conceptual approach based on measuring various aspects of competition between languages by the language integration and monopolization indices, on the one hand, and the polylingualism coefficient, on the other. The approach is applied to the situation in the Baltic Sea region of the EU. The article uses data from Eurostat, Eurobarometer, and the Baltic statistical offices to analyze the performance of Baltic language markets by assessing the impact of the EU integration on the use of languages in the region. The findings show a growing tendency towards polylingualism in countries participating in integration associations.     Abstract: Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird versucht, zwei Forschungstraditionen zur moralischen Entwicklung einander gegenüberzustellen. Dabei wird vor allem das Problem erörtert, wie wir eine Unterscheidung treffen können zwischen mehr oder weniger gültigen moralischen Normen. Von der einen Tradition aus, die Kohlberg folgt, ist eine höhere Autorität nämlich Vernunft, das wesentliche Entscheidungskriterium. Diese führt laut Kohlberg zu einer Moral, die auf dem Prinzip der Gerechtigkeit beruht. Der erzähltheoretische Ansatz hingegen betrachtet den Diskurs als das entscheidende Validiäitskriterium für moralische Normen. Genauer gesagt ist es das Prinzip der Beantwortbarkeit, das dazu führt, daß Normen im Diskurs verhandelt werden müssen und daß Abweichungen von der Norm oder Änderungen von Normen in diesem begründet werden müssen.     Abstract: Das schillernde Phänomen der Metapher hat in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften immer wieder begeisternde Programmatiken (Lakoff 1987) und emphatisches Interesse (Streeck 1991) ausgelöst - eine Begeisterung, die zuweilen eine wilde Art des Zugriffs auf das Material nach sich zog (vgl. Graf 1988) und ganz im Gegensatz zum Stand empirischer Forschungen steht (Buchholz 1993, Schmitt 1995). Von einer brauchbaren und akzeptierten metaphernanalytischen Methode kann noch keine Rede sein; im folgenden will ich daher das unwegsame Terrain der Methodendiskussion nicht betreten, sondern für den Teilbereich der metaphorischen Repräsentation biographischer Konstrukte einige Probleme und mögliche Lösungen beschreiben. Zunächst skizziere ich einige Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von Biographie und Sprache, präzisiere dann den hier gebrauchten Begriff der Metapher, bevor ich Probleme einer metaphernanalytischen Biographieforschung diskutiere.     Abstract: This paper employs discursive constructivism to delineate four rhetorical paradigms of nationalist discourse and to compare their potential for conflict. It proposes a four-fold typology which sees the intuitive tropes of antithesis and simile, and the counterintuitive metaphor and irony as structuring principles for national self-images. These are four modes of constructing a cultural deixis, that is, a relationship between national self and its cultural other. The paper argues that the frequency and magnitude of nationalistic conflicts may be minimized by the steady and widespread counter-enculturation of the non-conflictual discourses of analogical (simile-based), metaphoric, and ironic nationalisms. This argument is illustrated with examples from modern and recent Romanian history, but may be taken to epitomize the condition of most postcommunist European nations

    Abstract: This study tries to expand the richness of Bakhtin's theory of novel by showing the reader that its thorough features could be traced back in a play rather than a novel, considering it more than what is usually the basis of "historical poetics" mainly in the form of a novel accentuating the constitution of a social ideology besides an individual one while gesturing dialogically in the interaction between representation in its textual form and particularities of its proper probable forces in their socio-historical stratifications within notions such as dialogism, intertextuality, heteroglossia and polyphony.     Abstract: Change is one of the fundamentals of every language. Every community consists of different generations with various perspectives toward life. The difference among different generations' vernaculars are so drastic that it would not be an exaggeration to claim that every generation of a society or a speech community has its own language or vernacular which distinguishes it from other generations or age-groups of the society in lexico-grammatical terms. This study put the frequency of expressions and proverbs in different generations' speech styles under investigation. Hence, inspired by stratified randomization technique, the researcher randomly selected a group of 24 middle-aged and similarly a group of 24 teenager participants of the two genders. Der Hintergrund ist die Entstehung und Verfestigung von ethnischen Schichtungen in so gut wie allen Aufnahmeländern und die Vermutung, dass dabei - wenngleich nicht nur und nicht unabhängig von möglichen anderen Einflüssen, wie etwa soziale Distanzen oder Diskriminierungen - bestimmte Defizite in der Beherrschung der jeweiligen Landessprache eine besonders große Rolle spielen. Die Grundlage der Ausführungen bilden vorzugsweise theoretische und empirische Studien, die die sozialen Bedingungen des (Zweit-)Spracherwerbs bzw. der Entstehung einer (kompetenten) Bilingualität und deren Effekte auf den Bildungs- und Arbeitsmarkterfolg abzuschätzen erlauben. Die theoretische Phasenentwicklung, die Lévi-Strauss zum Gegenstand Musik geführt hat, entlang der Hauptbereiche: Verwandtschaftssysteme, Zeichenkommunikation bzw. das dialektische Verhältnis von Sprache und Kultur, Denksysteme schriftloser Völker und Mythen. 2. Die sukzessive Zuspitzung einer materialen Theorie des Geistes als leitende Dimension dieser Entwicklung und Hauptgebiet des strukturalistischen Denkens. Die zentrale Bedeutung von Musik für dieses Denken durch ihre Verklammerung von Geist und Natur. 3.     Abstract: In dem Beitrag wird aus der Perspektive der Linguistik skizziert, an welchem Punkt eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Soziologen und Linguisten wünschenswert und notwendig ist. Es werden Fragen formuliert, die bei der Arbeit an linguistischer Handlungstheorie und soziolinguistischen Problemen aufgetaucht sind und der Diskussion mit Soziologen bedürfen. Dabei wird eine Art Programmatik für eine mögliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen Linguisten und Soziologen entwickelt. Eine Verständigung mit Soziologen wird auf drei Gebieten vor allem befürwortet: im Bereich (1) sprachlicher Handlungen als Gegenstand der Linguistik; (2) sprachlicher Variation; (3) Sprachgeschichte. Es wird in zwei Schritten vorgegangen. Zunächst werden die drei Forschungsgebiete und die Probleme, die bei der Bearbeitung im Augenblick vordringlich zu sein scheinen, pointiert auf die Interessen der Soziologen hin skizziert.     Abstract: 'Im Rahmen der post-positivistischen Neuorientierung der Sozial- und Humanwissenschaften hat sich ein verstärktes Interesse an der Erzählung und dem Erzählen herausgebildet. Dabei geht es nicht allein um ein weiteres Untersuchungsfeld, sondern um einen neuen intellektuellen Stil, der sich an hermeneutisch-interpretativen Traditionen orientiert. Im Rückgriff auf diskurspsychologische, konversationsanalytische, literaturwissenschaftliche und sprachphilosophische Überlegungen wird diskutiert, warum das Studium der Narration auch für die Psychologie eine viel versprechende Perspektive anbietet. In einer kritischen Diskussion herkömmlicher erzähl-theoretischer Konzeptionen wird dafür plädiert, das Erzählen als eine soziale und diskursive Praxis zu verstehen, und zwar im Sinne Wittgensteins als Sprachspiel und Lebensform.'     Abstract: Rejecting substantializing and essentializing concepts of culture, an understanding of culture that is epistemologically and hermeneutically motivated is outlined. In this view, culture is seen as a perspective or orientation that makes it possible to understand human actions, mind, and other psychological phenomena in a context without which they would not be understandable. This context only becomes intelligible if it is subject to interpretation, that is, if it is understood as a multilayered text, a narrative, a novel with countless plots, perspectives, levels of time, and spheres of emotion. Such narrative interpretation, it is argued, is what happens in cultural understanding. This argument is illustrated by an analysis of several forms of autobiographical identity

    Abstract: The "discoursal self", according to Ivanic, is "the impression... they [the students] consciously or unconsciously convey... in a particular written text. ... [I]t is constructed through the discourse characteristics of a text, which relate to values, beliefs, and power relations in the social context in which they were written" (25). The "autobiographical self", Ivanic explains, "is the identity which people bring with them to any act of writing" (24). The goal for this paper is an overview investigating whether or not students are aware of a discoursal self-being constructed for them as a result of being students in another academic environment. The author begins by exploring the theoretical concepts of the socially constructed "self", language and how language is used by society to influence the individual. Further, he narrows the focus and reviews the field of literature by Rhetoric and Composition scholars who have explored the issues and impacts of teaching academic discourse
