    Abstract: Frank Herbert's "Dune" (1965) is considered to be one of the most successful Science Fiction novels of the 20th century. It introduces its readers to a future universe, in which the production of the most valuable resource of the universe - 'spice' - is only possible on one vast desert planet called Arrakis. "Dune" offers many different motifs, including a hero that eventually turns into a superhuman being. However, the novel is also rich of orientalist semiotics and relates to a sign system existent when Herbert wrote his book. Frank Jacob discusses these semiotics in detail and shows how much of "Lawrence of Arabia" is present in the story's plot

Very often, the image presented is related to existent semiotics, and the respective sign systems determine the image of heroic actions and violence on the screen. The present volume provides a deeper insight into the forces at play when war films are presented on the big screen and intends to show why and how violent conflicts often have an afterlife as visual media as well

In ihrer typischsten Form sind sie Text-Bild-Gefüge, die sich digital mit viraler Geschwindigkeit verbreiten und transformieren. Die Autor*innen nehmen sich dieses Internetphänomens aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive an.     Abstract: Die These, Sherlock Holmes oder Auguste Dupin seien abduktive Schlußfolgerer, welche vor allem von SebeoWmicker-Sebeok und Eco in den letzten Jahren verbreitet wurde, beruht auf dem weitverbreiteten Mißverständnis, Abduktion und Hypothese seien in der Peirceschen Semiotik identische Schlußprozesse. Das Mißverständnis resultiert vor allem daraus, die logische Form der Handlung für das entscheidende Merkmal zu halten, während die Bedeutung des mehr oder weniger mit den Mitteln der Logik agierenden folgernden Handelns übersehen wird. in den frühen Schriften unterlief Peirce ein sehr ähnlicher Fehler. Ein Vergleich des Vergehens von Sherlock Holmes mit den Peirceschen Bestimmungen zur Abduktion wird zeigen, daß weder Holmes noch Dupin abduktiv 'raten'

    Abstract: Models are ubiquitous in the digital humanities. Against the backdrop of the recent discussion in the philosophy of science about what models are and what they do, this paper presents a semiotic perspective on models in the framework of Charles S. Peirce’s theory of signs that sheds light on the practice of modeling in the digital humanities. As a first step, it is argued that models are icons, i.e. signs that represent their specific objects by being regarded as similar to them; and that there are, in all, three basic types of model, namely “images,” “diagrams,” and “metaphors.” A second step explicates relevant implications of this model-theoretic approach, especially as they relate to the digital humanities.     Abstract: Eine für das humanwissenschaftliche Denken des 20. Jahrhunderts folgenreiche Implikation der Linguistik Saussures ist die Ablehnung eines realistischen Zeichenmodells. Damit ist ein Modell gemeint, in dem das Zeichen das Bezeichnete in erster Linie repräsentiert. Nicht nur die Saussuresche Linguistik und Semiotik - so wird im folgenden argumentiert, sondern auch Wygotskis psychologische Forschung zur Entwicklung von Denken und Sprechen bauen auf einem Zeichenmodell auf, das sich radikal von diesem realistischen Repräsentationsmodell unterscheidet. Trotz dieser (und anderer) Übereinstimmungen verfolgt Wygotski im Gegensatz zur strukturalistischen Herangehensweise jedoch eine pragmatische und kulturhistorische Semiotik, die in Kürze umrissen wird

    Abstract: "Je größer die Erfolge der Gleichstellungspolitik, der Genderforschung und im Diversity Management, desto vehementer die rhetorische Abwertung durch ihre Gegner: Damit lässt sich zwar die derzeitige publizistische Tendenz des Anti-Genderismus benennen, aber im hermeneutischen Sinn zu verstehen sind diese Reden und ihre Ziele deshalb noch nicht. Besonders die Autorinnen und Autoren tagesaktueller Kolumnen und Glossen haben während der letzten Jahre rhetorisch aufgerüstet. Auch in antifeministischen Foren und Blogs wird gegen Gender Studies und Gleichstellungspolitik gehetzt. Die Debatte hat sich dabei in eine Generationenfrage unterschiedlicher medialer Dispositive gewandelt, die analogen Konservatismus in Buchform gegen den Aktivismus der digital natives auszuspielen scheint. Der Beitrag versucht eine Bestandsaufnahme aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive und analysiert den Diskurs unter semiotischen und kollektivsymbolischen Gesichtspunkten."
