Was es für deutsche Schriftsteller daher bedeutete, Vaterland und Muttersprache auf der Flucht vor den Nationalsozialisten verlassen zu müssen, welche Auswirkungen der erzwungene Aufenthalt im fremden Kulturkreis auf ihr Verhältnis zum tradierten Eigenen haben konnte, wird hier erörtert – und mit der Frage verknüpft, was wir aus der Haltung der Emigranten von damals für unseren Umgang mit der eigenen Kultur beziehungsweise jener der Emigranten von heute lernen können

    Abstract: In der hier vorgelegten Dokumentation werden zwei Beiträge über Illja Erenburg in Auszügen vorgestellt und kommentiert. Beide Beiträge setzen sich mit dem "jüdischen" Erenburg auseinander, einem Aspekt, so die Autorin, der in der offiziellen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schriftsteller, Journalisten und Übersetzer in der Sowjetunion bis dahin tabu gewesen war. Die Autoren der hier wiedergegebenen Beiträge sind der russisch-jüdischer Altphilologe Shimon Markish und der russische Philosoph Boris Paramonov. Beide kommen aus der Sowjetunion, haben dieses Land jedoch bereits seit geraumer Zeit verlassen. Markishs Erkenntnisinteresse, so die Autorin, läßt sich vom Selbstbewußtsein des russisch-jüdischen Intellektuellen leiten, der sich in zwei Zivilisationen bzw. Kulturen, verankert sieht; demgegenüber sucht Paramonov einen mehr "objektiven" Zugang zu diesem Thema.     Abstract: 'This paper proposes a new use for old descriptions of the foreign that from today's point of view cannot be considered sources of factual information. Instead of questioning how much of these reports is empirically verifiable, they are usable as counterparts to empirical scenarios in historical comparisons, provided they can be qualified as counterfactual. There are two criteria they have to met to make this possible: They may not be too far away from the empirical reality, and they must be structurally compatible to modern scientific methodology, therefore descriptive and empirically orientated. This means that fictionality and counterfactuality are not mutually exclusive or incompatible, and old accounts can be used as counterfactuals. The material for demonstration is provided by analysing the descriptions Marco Polo and Mandeville gave of the Mongolian Empire, George Psalmanazar's Formosa, and Swift's Lilliput.'     Abstract: 'Die gegenwärtig zunehmend artikulierte Befürchtung einer zukünftigen 'Sterbepflicht' für alte Menschen reagiert nicht nur auf die gesundheitspolitischen Rationierungsdebatten und den Diskurs über die Sterbehilfe. Sie verweist auch auf eine schwerer bestimmbare kulturelle Verfassung, die gegenwärtig die Möglichkeit, ein langes Leben eigenhändig zu beenden, zu begründen scheint. Der Artikel untersucht deshalb sowohl die Begriffsgeschichte der 'Altentötung' als auch deren künstlerische Inszenierung zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Denn in beiden Fällen wird die kulturhistorische Dimension gegenwärtiger Debatten lesbar. Dabei lässt sich vor allem die Differenz zwischen vormodernen Praktiken bzw. deren Narrativierung auf der einen und modernen Imaginationen auf der anderen Seite herausarbeiten. Das Dispositiv dieser Differenz besteht in dem fundamentalen Konzept der Bevölkerung.     Abstract: Autobiographical mode of writing informs the works of many novelists, consciously or unconsciously. There are, however, diverse techniques for formulating these conscious or unconscious autobiographical interpolations in literary works. This essay aims to study the works of Sidonie-Gabreille Colette and Virginia Woolf to trace the nuances of the autobiographical mode in two contemporary female writers from different nations. We do not aim at proving that these two writers deploy the autobiographical mode in their writings, but how similar and different their autobiographical techniques in the creation of fiction are. Therefore, Colette's and Woolf's novels, in general, will be compared and contrasted with an eye on their self-defined strategies for the development of autobiographical fiction

    Abstract: Does such a thing as Indian Writing in English exist? Im Aufsatz, der in fünf Absätze gegliedert ist, möchte der Verfasser vor allem die Schwierigkeit dieser speziellen Genrebestimmung beleuchten. Die Werke der untersuchten Autoren und Autorinnen der Indischen Diaspora unterscheiden äußerst voneinander, sowohl in thematischer als auch stilistischer Hinsicht. Unter ihnen gibt es Romane und Erzählungen im klassischen Erzählstil von Autoren wie Naipaul, Ghosh, Lahiri, ... hauptsächlich gruppiert um Immigrationsthemen. Zugleich bemühen sich dagegen Autoren wie Rushdie, Roy, Tharoor, ... um Sprachzertrümmerung und um die Weiterentwicklung moderner Erzähltechniken. Nicht nur wird der große mannigfaltige geographische Raum Indien mit seinen Stärken und Schwächen geschildert, sondern es entstehen synchron Rave-Geschichten und Pop-Romane bei Rushdie und Kureishi.     Abstract: In his Discipline and Punish (1995), Foucault describes the plague-stricken city where authorities exercised surveillance to control the contagion of the disease. As Foucault states, the first precaution to take was the strict division of space which led to the isolation of dwellers; this spatial partitioning reinforced the notion of pervasive surveillance and paved the way for the modern disciplinary society of which Panopticon was an ideal architectural embodiment. In this paper, we try to show how a combination of the plague-ridden city’s discipline diagrams and Panopticism make the whole scene of Auster's Ghosts. By focusing on the role of writing in power mechanisms depicted in the novel, we illustrate the power-knowledge relations which involve the characters in the process of subjectification and which construct the subject position of the author (Blue) who acts as the (in) visible eye of authority.     Abstract: The War Plays'trilogy (Red, Black and Ignorant, The Tin Can People and Great Peace) presents the scenario of a waste land ‘with apocalyptical shades. The post nuclear environment of the plays reflects the Atmosphere of the historical period when it was written. The beginning of the eighties saw the debate about nuclear weapons and strong discussions about the Thatcher administration in this respect. Edward Bond emerged from a group of left-wing writers who joined the experimental fringe theatre in the 1970s. To make sense of this literature, we turn to content analysis to examine the trends and categorize the burgeoning management research of the past 25 years that uses content analysis. In Red Black and Ignorant characters confront the paradox. Society uses dramatists to create the drama it needs but a dramatist is not a conduit.     Abstract: An imitation of the literary styles and modes of expression of the great writers in the post-World War II was the criterion of success for any male or female writer. The conventions of T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden influenced the poetics and thought of the younger generation poets. For example, Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) was an ardent disciple of these conventions in her early career. She was influenced by the phallogocentric discourse of subject formation. She followed this man-made discourse to be accepted within the literary circle as a successful woman writer, but she realized that this discourse didn’t help women in the expression of their female voices.     Abstract: Prince V. F. Odoyevsky (1803-1869) was the Russian writer, philosopher, musicologist and subtle musical critic, public figure, founder of "Society of philosophy-lovers" and author of "Motley Tales with Witticisms", fascinating monument of native culture; the book was published only once during the life of the writer and afterwards was not republished as the cycle. In literary criticism "Motley Tales" as the unified and important cycle by V. F. Odoyevsky were given scant coverage, although this literary work marked the beginning of new period in the writer's oeuvre; an image of narrator Homoseyko is especially interesting because it is not only the intellectual hero, but also the alter ego of the writer. "Motley Tales" manifest a unique opportunity of watching the rising of themes and motives which will be revealed in the writer's creation later, as well as following the formation of philosophical, aesthetic and artistic principles of author, as his fairy tales include the patterns

    Abstract: Antony Pogorelsky (1787-1836) (the pseudonym of А. А. Perovsky) was one of the writers active in the early stages of Russian romantic prose, when romanticism, with its new artistic outlook based on rapt attention towards and keen interest in the inner world of feelings and emotions of its literary heroes, replaced the literary movement of sentimentalism with its orientation toward the ideas of the enlightenment. The current article is aimed at the investigation of the first book by A.     Abstract: Art in general and fiction in particular have had close affinities with politics throughout history. When there is a close tie between a narrative fiction and political issues then critics may deem it as "committed fiction". Political fiction is at the crossroads of political science and the art of fiction. And more often than not, novelists are involved with politics but not all of them are dubbed as or even consider themselves to be political novelists. In this article I attempt to investigate political fiction as a distinct genre produced (un)consciously by a range of (politically committed) novelists and critics. The authors discussed in this paper demonstrate dissimilar perspectives on freedom and democracy. Also, regarding political fiction and the responsibility of author, we will see how divergent is the attitudes of critics such as George Orwell, Allen Robbe-Grillet, Juan Goytisolo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Isabel Allende

    Abstract: Die kommunistische Kaderpartei versuchte die Literaten zu einer kollektiven Künstleragentur zu formen, welche den Anforderungen des sozialistischen Realismus zu genügen und als Parteisoldaten im Klassenkampf ihren Kampfauftrag zu erfüllen hatte. Alle Prozesse freier Selbstorganisation werden von der Parteiführung als Disziplinbruch stigmatisiert. Unter Berufung auf ihre künstlerische Identität als Literaturproduzenten sollen die Literaten auch als Parteisoldaten kämpfen, dabei sollten die Mitglieder der deutschsprachigen Sektion des sowjetischen Schriftstellerverbandes im Exil als Virtuosen des sozialistischen Realismus ihren Klassenkampfauftrag wahrnehmen. In Anlehnung an Max Webers Theorie der Virtuosengemeinschaft von religiös Qualifizierten kann die leninistische Kaderpartei als eine Virtuosengemeinschaft gekennzeichnet werden.     Abstract: Der Beitrag untersucht das Problem der Selbstbehauptung in modernen Gesellschaften. Anhand der Romane von Tom Sharpe werden (britische) gesellschaftliche Verhältnisse dargestellt, unter denen soziale Wertschätzung kaum erwerbbar ist. Aus einer soziologischen Interpretation der Romane wird deutlich, dass es nicht irgendwelche "Fehler" - Persönlichkeitsfehler - sind, die das Gelingen der individuellen Produktion von Wertschätzung vereiteln. Die strukturelle Anlage der Wertschätzungsproduktion lässt die Erzeugung von sozialer Wertschätzung vielmehr prinzipiell - also gerade dann, wenn alles 'funktioniert' - nur in Ausnahmefällen zu: ein modernes Wertschätzungsdilemma. Dieses Dilemma ist eine Konsequenz jenes gesellschaftlichen Arrangements, das Wohlstand als einen Mechanismus der Wertschätzungsproduktion nahe legt und zugleich als Konsequenz des Strebens nach Wohlstand "Brutalitäten" im zwischenmenschlichen Umgang durch Anspruchsinflationen auf der Interaktionsebene, durch Differenzha

    Abstract: Created in 1934, the Union of Soviet Writers facilitated the instrumentalisation of literature by the Soviet authorities: it was its main goal, explicitly proclaimed at the first Congress of this Union, and repeated until the 1980s. The Union of Soviet Writers was supposed to create and educate a "New Person" who would build and embody communism. Furthermore, the Union of Soviet Writers was the model of other creative unions in the USSR and in the Soviet bloc. For more than fifty years, it selected, guided and controlled writers; it participated to the censorship process, as well as to the purges and repression of dissidents. In exchange, the Union of Soviet Writers received very important material rewards, of which its leaders were the main beneficiaries. The Union of Writers developed as a pyramidal structure: it had organizations in every Soviet republic (in Russia, only since 1958) and in many towns, and they collaborated at all levels with the corresponding CPSU structures.     Abstract: "Dieser Beitrag hat die Plattform Ernst Jandl Online zum Thema. Nach einer Einführung zum österreichischen Schriftsteller Ernst Jandl (1925-2000) und zu bisherigen Ansätzen, sein Leben in verschiedenen Formaten zu präsentieren, wird das Konzept der Plattform dargestellt. Den Ausgangspunkt der Überlegungen bildet dabei die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von verschiedenartigen Egodokumenten zueinander. Ausgehend davon wird das biographietheoretische Konzept der Website skizziert, die sich einerseits auf das Modell der Anti-Biographie (Nye), andererseits auf die historischen Formen der Biobibliographik stützt.
