    Abstract: "This paper identifies six main theories of the determinants of social trust, and tests them against survey data from seven nations, 1999-2001. Three of the six theories of trust fare rather poorly and three do better. First and foremost, social trust tends to be high among citizens who believe that there are few severe social conflicts and where the sense of public safety is high. Second, informal social networks are associated with trust. And third, those who are successful in life trust more, or are more inclined by their personal experience to do so. Individual theories seem to work best in societies with higher levels of trust, and societal ones in societies with lower levels of trust. This may have something to do with the fact that our two low trust societies happen to have experienced revolutionary change in the very recent past, so that societal events have overwhelmed individual circumstances."     Abstract: In der vorliegenden Studie werden auf der Grundlage von Makrodaten die Beziehungen zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum, sozialer Gerechtigkeit und Umweltschutz im Zeitablauf durch ein einfaches mathematisches Modell dargestellt und dabei die besondere Bedeutung des ökologischen Aspekts für die gesellschaftliche Wohlfahrt hervorgehoben. Es wird ein Mikrodatenmodell zugrunde gelegt, anhand dessen die verschiedenen psychischen Zustände von einzelnen Personen aufgezeigt werden können, die diese als Arbeitskräfte von ihrem Eintritt bis zu ihrem Ausscheiden in einer hierarchischen Organisation durchlaufen. Der Übergang von einem in einen anderen Zustand kann als stochastischer Prozess aufgefasst werden, wobei jede Zustandsänderung zufällig mit bestimmter Wahrscheinlichkeit erfolgt und von dem jeweils zuletzt erreichten Zustand abhängt. Je nach Intensität des Übergangs wird der neue Zustand schneller oder langsamer erreicht, wodurch die Situation eines Markoffschen Prozesses gegeben ist. Die emp

    Abstract: Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) war einer der produktivsten zeitgenössischen Denker der Soziologie. Seine internationale Anerkennung beschränkt sich jedoch nicht allein auf den Bereich der Wissenschaft: Als weltweit engagierter Intellektueller hat Bourdieu - wie wohl kein anderer - soziologische Erkenntnis als politische Aufklärung der Alltagspraxis wirksam gemacht. Zentrale Begriffe der Soziologie Bourdieus wie etwa "Habitus", "Kapital" oder "Feld" werden heute in einer Vielzahl von sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen verwendet. Was aber hält diese Begriffe zusammen? Welche immanente Logik führt zu ihren Bedeutungen? Und wie werden diese miteinander verknüpft? Kurz: Worin liegen die erkenntnistheoretischen Voraussetzungen von Bourdieus Werk? Material culture is examined from a variety of perspectives and the authors rigorously investigate the creation and meaning of material object, and their associated practices within the context of time and place.     Abstract: 'Human rights of immigrants have not been directly related to rights recognised to members of traditional minorities in some constitutional or international frameworks. However, immigration processes entail new demands of integrating linguistic rights within the public space and institutions. The Spanish example can open new challenges to multiculturalist approaches, since it brings together traditional and new linguistic diversity in a very significant level. In particular, new challenges arise in sub-state autonomous entities, as is the case in the Basque country, where linguistic diversity has been a traditional element of the society. These new multilingual realities challenge the traditional view of diversity and force us to rethink the substantial contents of some fundamental rights in order to accommodate democratically linguistic diversity in post-modern societies.' Between institutions in the dual sense of the term: institutions as organizations and institutions as conventions. Ideas and the energy to take them forward are often born when people from different organizations come together, ideas that might not fit within one institution alone. And the introduction of new ideas often involves pushing institutions as conventions aside, creating new space BETWEEN existing institutions for the different idea to emerge. The article explores the example of a business-and-research venture, CHOICE mobilitätsproviding GmbH, to illustrate the importance of multiple types of 'BETWEEN' and their significance for organizational learning."     Abstract: "The assumption that today's society is polarised, is a very popular one in the current public and scientific debate. Access to the labour market is referred to as the main characteristic, which decides whether someone is 'inside' or 'outside'. Lots of theoretical and conceptual efforts have been undertaken to establish dimensions and characteristics of social exclusion, addressing processes of denied participation - socially, economically, politically or culturally. Nevertheless, poverty and social exclusion as two descriptions of severe social inequality have often been mixed up, and hypothesis about their interrelation and characteristics have hardly been tested empirically. Is poverty the first stage on the way 'out of society', or are there considerable differences between the risk of becoming poor or socially excluded?     Abstract: "Der Beitrag untersucht die Bedeutung der gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen für die berufliche Partizipation von Frauen und zwar anhand des Prozesses der Integration der Frauen in Managementpositionen in der Privatwirtschaft im Verlauf der 80er Jahre in Schweden und Deutschland (alte Bundesländer). In dem Zeitraum erhöhte sich in beiden Ländern der Anteil der Frauen in diesen Positionen, obwohl beide Länder unterschiedliche Ansätze in der Frage der Arbeitsmarktintegration der Frauen sowie der Gleichstellungspolitik auf dem Arbeitsmarkt institutionalisiert haben. Als theoretischer Rahmen werden Ansätze der ländervergleichenden Forschung zum Geschlechterverhältnis mit Konzepten aus dem Forschungsfeld 'Organisation und Geschlecht' und aus der Theorietradition des symbolischen Interaktionismus verknüpft.     Abstract: 'Der Artikel geht in einer historischen Spurensuche den Belegen reisender Europäerinnen im Verlauf der Jahrhunderte nach. Er beleuchtet einerseits Reisen als geschlechtsspezifisches Phänomen, und behandelt andererseits die sozialgeschichtlichen Rahmenbedingungen für weibliches Reisen und die damit verknüpften gesellschaftlichen Diskurse - vor allem die bürgerliche Geschlechterideologie des 19. Jahrhunderts mit ihrer geschlechtsspezifischen Raumkonzeption, deren Auswirkungen auf weibliche Mobilität, Bewegungsfreiheit und Raumnutzung bis in die Gegenwart reichen. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Reisemöglichkeiten und -motive für Frauen ausgelotet. Besonders die Konfrontation mit dem Unbekannten und Fremden erweist sich hier bis heute von großer Bedeutung. Dabei zeigt sich, dass das Potenzial erweiterter Raumnutzung durch das Reisen und die Aneignung neuer, 'fremder' Räume sowohl für historische als auch heutige Frauen Möglichkeiten für Selbstbestätigung und erweiterte Selbsterkenntnis

    Abstract: The present paper intends to explore Gibson's Neuromancer (1984) with a critical eye on the changes and influences technology has effected in contemporary societies, to elucidate how and in which ways these impacts have brought about changes in both individuals’ roles and attitudes, and to investigate the different realms influenced by technology. Hence, in the introduction section, some terms associated with Neuromncer will be first defined and expounded, and then in the discussion, the focus of the current research will be on the above-mentioned work in order to shed light on the main concerns of the book. At the end, a conclusion based upon the points discussed in the preceding sections will be drawn in order to help readers of Gibson's appreciate the significance of his work in portraying the ramifications of advanced technology in years to come

    Abstract: Louis Althusser (1918-1990) builds on the work of Jacques Lacan to understand the way ideology functions in society. He thus moves away from the earlier Marxist understanding of ideology. In the earlier model, ideology was believed to create what was termed "false consciousness", a false understanding of the way the world functioned. Althusser explains that for Marx "Ideology is [...] thought as an imaginary construction whose status is exactly like the theoretical status of the dream among writers before Freud. For those writers, the dream was the purely imaginary, i.e. null, result of the 'day's residues" (1971:108). Althusser, by contrast, approximates ideology to Lacan's understanding of reality, the world we construct around us after our entrance into the symbolic order. For Althusser, as for Lacan, it is impossible to access the real conditions of existence due to our reliance on language. It lays a special focus on hermeneutical and genre analysis and on research with audiovisual data. Far from constituting an already closed field, the authors stress the fact that methodological advances in qualitative research based in visual data still face a number of pending quests. This encompasses sequentiality, complexity and naturalness of video-graphic data, and extends to the respective methodological challenges for transcription, analysis and presentation of results.'     Abstract: "Weniges hat in gleichem Maße die Geschichte der Lebenswissenschaften revolutioniert, so der Medizinhistoriker Volker Hess, 'wie die geselligen Selbstversuche des Galvanisierens' bei denen sich die Forscher um 1800 in 'elektrischen Vernetzungen' die Haut der Körper bis zu den Muskeln öffneten, um im Zucken unter Strom eine Repräsentation spezifischer Lebenskräfte zu erforschen. Gleichzeitig handelte es sich bei dem, in exklusiven Männerrunden im Zwischenreich 'häuslicher Öffentlichkeit' stattfindenden, freundschaftlichen 'Symexperimentieren' um eine durchaus ambivalente Habituseinübung: Denn die romantisch geforderte Schmerzsensibilität - die 'naturale' Männlichkeit - fungierte zugleich als Voraussetzung von Kontrolle und Lesbarkeit und diente so der Herstellung 'wissenschaftlicher Objektivität' sowie 'männlicher Selbstbeherrschung' und damit 'kultureller Männlichkeit'. He uses these emblems in order to subvert their meanings and manifest the discrepancies between characters' living in the West and the realities they confront. In his play, A Lie of the Mind, Sam Shepard reflects on the traditional meanings of myth and the erasure of them in the postmodern societies. Furthermore, the postmodern universe in these three plays is bombarded with representation and distortions of reality, and hyperreality which make reality be masked and obscure.
