Abstract: 'Die Gesellschaft Sozialwissenschaftlicher Infrastruktureinrichtungen e.V. (GESIS) hat die zentrale Aufgabe sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung zu unterstützen. Zu den Dienstleistungen der GESIS gehören der Aufbau und das Angebot von Datenbanken mit Informationen zu sozialwissenschaftlicher Literatur und zu Forschungsaktivitäten sowie die Archivierung und Bereitstellung von Umfragedaten aus der Sozialforschung. Wichtige Funktionen sind auch die Beratung in Methodenfragen, die Entwicklung komplexer Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung sowie die eigenständige Dauerbeobachtung der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen mit Hilfe dieser Instrumente. Die Idee, die GESIS-Institute vermittels einer telefonischen Befragung deutschsprachiger Soziologieprofessorinnen und -professoren evaluieren zu lassen, hat ihren Ursprung in der GESIS-Arbeitsgruppe 'Qualitätssicherung'. Abstract: "This paper develops a unifying framework to understand competition issues in network industries. It focuses on the telecom(munication) industry and takes two specific effects of this industry into account. First, the telecom industry is in continuous evolution and alliances affect not only the current market power of the firms but also the evolution of the industry. Second, the production of services in the industry is evolving towards the provision of integrated services in a 'system' that benefits from strong 'network externalities'. The analysis suggests that the antitrust authorities should capture as well such effects as the magnitude of the installed bases, the compatibility of the alliance's system with other systems, the switching costs for customers and application writers, and the 'credibility' of the alliance to offer the service. Abstract: "This essay intends to explore three innovative ways to foster job creation in services: First, the switch from product markets to utility markets would induce more and new types of user services. Such a switch would not only be more employment friendly but also foster a sustainable economic development compatible with ecological principles. The reorientation from products to utilities provides strong arguments for an emphasis on the framework conditions of services, for instance for lowering VAT in favour of labour intensive services, for forward regulation through (usually service enhancing) high quality standards, for deregulating market entry barriers, and for subsidising networks instead of individual products or services. Abstract: "In diesem Papier wird aus historischer und begriffskritischer Perspektive die Entwicklung des öffentlichen Nahverkehrs in Deutschland zu einem Bestandteil der Daseinsvorsorge nachgezeichnet. Zum einen werden sowohl die politischen Umbrüche als auch die sozial-ökonomischen Veränderungen seit dem 19. Jahrhundert als treibende Kräfte einer flächendeckenden Kommunalisierung des öffentlichen Verkehrs in der Weimarer Zeit ausgemacht. Zum anderen lässt sich die Entwicklung der Daseinsvorsorge als allgemeiner ethischer Bezugsrahmen für die Verwaltungstätigkeit aus dem historischen Prozess der Industrialisierung und Urbanisierung erklären. Die besondere deutsche Spezifik erfährt dieser Gegenstand durch die Begrifflichkeit, die sich im Sprachduktus der Existenzialphilosophie präsentiert und in der Begründung durch Ernst Forsthoff auch Anleihen im nationalsozialistischen Vokabular nimmt.
