    Abstract: "Viewed in the light of the theory of accidental excellence, there is much to suggest that the success of the Internet and its various protocols derives from a communications technology accident, or better, a series of accidents. In the early 1990s, many experts still saw the Internet as an academic toy that would soon vanish into thin air again. The Internet probably gained its reputation as an academic toy largely because it violated the basic principles of traditional communications networks. The quarrel about paradigms that erupted in the 1970s between the telephony world and the newly emerging Internet community was not, however, only about transmission technology doctrines. It was also about the question - still unresolved today - as to who actually governs the flow of information: the operators or the users of the network?     Abstract: 'Mit der Entwicklung von Mikrobiotechnologien könnte sich die mediengeschichtliche Entwicklung umkehren: Nicht mehr weitet sich der Mensch über seine Apparate aus, sondern die Apparate wandern in das Innere des Körpers und ersetzen dort die menschlichen Organe. Nach einem an Marshall McLuhan orientierten Abriß der Mediengeschichte bis ins elektronische Zeitalter, wird anhand der Terminator-Filme von James Cameron die Zukunft unserer (Computer)-Körper sichtbar. Diese faszinierend verwandlungsfähigen, beinahe unverletzlichen Körper inszenieren allerdings wie die im Cybersex, in dem der Andere ausgelöscht zu werden droht, keine Erotik der Lust, sondern der Macht.' The novel shows living in an A.I-controlled society behind a revolution or revolt by self-controlling machines. A personified computer virus infects all the world's computers. As a result, it leads to disruption in main factors of human life - billions of people are about to die. A novel in which, Hertling warns of dehumanization under the shadow of superintelligence to challenge our minds to ponder about such a future. This study attempts to demonstrate that Hertling criticizes singularity and intelligence explosion in which mankind are entrapped in A.I-controlled society.     Abstract: "This study offers a basis for understanding China's performance from a Latin American perspective, and stressing the massive economic opportunities and challenges, and particularly for Central America and Mexico. Moreover, the document assesses in detail the macroeconomic, trade and employment policy and institutional changes in China and its potential effects in Central America and Mexico. These effects are analyzed in the Chinese, Central American, Mexican and US market in general, but also for the value-added chains of electronics and yarn-textile-garment. The findings presented will be of value to all of those who are trying to understand and learn from the extraordinary experience of China over the last decades.     Abstract: This article presents some observations about the modelling discourse in the Digital Humanities from the perspective of an early stage researcher. It touches briefly on issues of interdisciplinarity and disciplinary discontinuity. Specifically, it questions the shared basis of the discourse in terms of the terminology that is used and the research literature that is commonly drawn upon. By way of example, the article calls attention to the seemingly forgotten and in any case neglected literature concerned with the conceptualization of models and modelling in science and the humanities that was produced by cyberneticists and philosophers of science in the GDR and the USSR, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. It may be argued that in order to advance the discourse about modelling in the Digital Humanities, the discourse about modelling in the humanities would have to be unearthed and considered first or at least as well, particularly where it already crossed paths with disciplines adj

    Abstract: Dieser Beitrag wurde anlässlich des dreißigjährigen Bestehens der Abteilung Literarische und Dokumentarische Datenverarbeitung an der Universität Tübingen verfasst. Er gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Datenverarbeitung auf dem Gebiet der Geisteswissenschaften in diesem Zeitraum. Zunächst werden Erfahrungen mit der Datenverarbeitung in den Geisteswissenschaften referiert und aktuelle Entwicklungen auf diesem Gebiet vorgestellt. Dann werden Herausforderungen diskutiert, mit denen sich die Datenverarbeitung in den Geisteswissenschaften konfrontiert sieht. Abschließend stellt der Verfasser die Bedeutung der Datenverarbeitung in den Geisteswissenschaften in den kommenden Jahren aus seiner Sicht dar. (ICEÜbers)

    Abstract: "In this article the author tries to articulate a critical assessment of the current geopolitical assets of Digital Humanities. This critique is based firstly on data about the composition of various government organs, institutions and the principal journals in the field, and secondly on a general reflection on the cultural, political and linguistic bias of digital standards, protocols and interfaces. These reflections suggest that DH is not only a discipline and an academic discourse dominated materially by an Anglo-American élite and intellectually by a mono-cultural view, but also that it lacks a theoretical model for reflecting critically on its own instruments. The author concludes by proposing the elaboration of a different model of DH, based on the concept of knowledge as a commons and the cultivation of cultural margins, as opposed to its present obsession with large-scale digitization projects and 'archiving fever', that leads to an increase in our dependency on the produc

    Abstract: "In this paper the author argues that markup and writing belong to related systems for storing information and/ or speech and that there is no clear border between the two. In addition he argues that marking up text done as more or less separate from ordinary writing has been used in Western scholarly work at least since the times of the library in the Museum in Alexandria and up until today. Markup means that some part of a document is identified and some statement is made about the linguistic and/ or textual status and interpretative frame of that part or it is extracted for some scholarly purpose. The ways and means by which this is done may vary. It will depend both on the aim: why exactly do we wish to identify this part of the text? And on the technology available: papyrus scrolls and reed pens make for different markup than what is done with computer stored texts.     Abstract: "Two developments in computational text analysis may change the way qualitative data analysis in social sciences is performed: 1. the availability of digital text worth to investigate is growing rapidly, and 2. the improvement of algorithmic information extraction approaches, also called text mining, allows for further bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative text analysis. The key factor hereby is the inclusion of context into computational linguistic models which extends conventional computational content analysis towards the extraction of meaning. To clarify methodological differences of various computer-assisted text analysis approaches the article suggests a typology from the perspective of a qualitative researcher. This typology shows compatibilities between manual qualitative data analysis methods and computational, rather quantitative approaches for large scale mixed method text analysis designs."     Abstract: This paper uses agent-based modeling to investigate the philosophy of Adam Smith. During his lifetime, Smith published two books. In An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), he argued that market behavior was dictated primarily by self-interest. However, his earlier book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), placed sympathy and benevolence at the center of human social psychology. Reconciling these apparently contradictory views is known as the Adam Smith Problem. This study uses an agent-based model to combine Smith’s theories, exploring how social norms affect economic behavior, and vice versa. Although they share many basic assumptions, Smith’s works leave important questions unanswered: Theory of Moral Sentiments offers a strong model of how social norms consolidate but lacks a coherent explanation for how norms change over time, and, on the other side, Wealth of Nations does not account for the influence of social norms on commercial transaction

    Abstract: In dieser Arbeit wird ein Ansatz aufgezeigt, bei dem die Entwicklung von Theorien unter dem Einfluß verschiedener Problemlösestrategien durch den Einsatz von computer-basierter Simulation untersucht werden kann. Um Simulationen auf einem Rechner durchführen zu können, wird ein Simulationsmodell benötigt, das, formuliert in einer geeigneten Programmiersprache, die relevanten Aspekte repräsentiert, die bei der Entwicklung von Theorien eine Rolle spielen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird bei der Beschreibung von Theorien auf den strukturalistischen Theorienbegriff zurückgegriffen. Mit diesem Theoriebegriff können Problemarten definiert werden, die es im Verlauf der wissenschaftlichen Entwicklung zu lösen gibt. Solche Problemarten erwachsen aus der Behauptung, daß eine Anwendung zu einem Modell einer Theorie paßt und diese Passung sich konsistent zu anderen Theorien verhält.     Abstract: Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt die Ergebnisse von zehn qualitativen Interviews vor, die im Vorfeld des Projektes "Computer in der familialen Alltagswelt" durchgeführt wurden, und liefert relevante Informationen zu familialen Gestaltungsmustern der Computer-Nutzung. Der Fokus der Befragung lag dabei auf dem Umgang der Kinder mit Medien-PC (Spiele) und Internet. Hinsichtlich des Nutzungsumfangs von Internet und vor allem des PC bestehen erhebliche Unterschiede zwischen den Familien. Zum einen differiert der Umfang der Nutzung durch die Kinder, zum anderen deren Bewertung durch die Eltern. Die Spannweite der Zeit, die die befragten Kinder pro Woche am PC verbringen, reicht dabei von einer bis weit über zehn Stunden. Vor allem mit PC-Spielen wird viel Zeit verbracht, was nicht selten zu Auseinandersetzungen in den Familien führt. Das Internet wird weniger intensiv von den Kindern genutzt und dient in erster Linie zur Informationsrecherche. Dieser Bereich ist kaum konfliktbeladen, aber

    Abstract: Die Nutzung von Computer und Internet gehört inzwischen zum selbstverständlichen Alltagshandeln der meisten Kinder und Jugendlichen in unserer Gesellschaft. Informationssuche für die Schularbeiten oder über Stars, Online Spiele, Musik-Downloads, Foren, Chats – das Internet dient als Wissens- und Unterhaltungsraum für eine ganze Bandbreite von Interessen. Die Sicht der Gesellschaft auf diese Internetaktivitäten von Kindern ist zwiespältig: Zum einen ist die möglichst frühzeitige Bildung einer umfassenden, alle neuen Medien einschließenden Informationskompetenz erwünscht und wird begrüßt, zum anderen fordert die ungeschützte Konfrontation mit z.B. pornographischem, gewalthaltigem oder rassistischem Material den Jugendschutz heraus. Die Zusammenstellung neuerer sozialwissenschaftlicher Literatur- und Forschungsnachweise gibt Einblick in die Diskussionen zum Thema Medienkompetenz und Mediennutzung von Kindern und Jugendlichen.     Abstract: Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Verhältnis der Sphären des Technischen und des Ästhetischen. Technik und Ästhetik stehen sich spätestens seit der Industrialisierung diametral gegenüber, nicht weniger als Arbeit und Spiel. Eine vom Dualismus geprägte Denkweise stellt das Reich der Freiheit dem Reich der Notwendigkeit gegenüber, separiert eine ästhetische Welt von der technischen. Arbeit wird zur Technik gezählt. In deren Zweckorientierung und Determiniertheit sieht man - konträr zur Sphäre des Ästhetischen - in der ästhetischen Erziehung bzw. Bildung und darüber hinaus immer wieder die kreative Eigentätigkeit und damit die Freiheit des Menschen gefährdet - unabhängig davon, dass durch Technik der Mensch sich lebenserleichternde Maschinen und technische Systeme schafft. So werden schließlich die Künste und Spiel einerseits, Arbeit und Technik andererseits als sich prinzipiell ausschließende Tätigkeiten bewertet.     Abstract: "Warum sollte ein Mann, der eine Diktatur erlebt und bekämpft hat, virtuell den alles bestimmenden Herrscher spielen, warum ein Mann, dessen Leben von schwierigen Neuanfängen geprägt ist, im Computerspiel stündlich wieder ganz 'bei null anfangen', warum eine junge Frau, die als Au-pair Überstunden macht, zusätzlich acht Stunden täglich virtuell Hausarbeit, Hauseinrichtung und Familiengründung 'spielen'? In medizinisch-psychologischen Erklärungsansätzen für Computerspielabhängigkeit wird das hohe Abhängigkeitsrisiko bei bestimmten Spielgenres durch überindividuelle neurophysiologische Vorgänge im Gehirn erklärt. Die Autorinnen haben dagegen aus insgesamt 22 biographischen, teilnarrativen Interviews mit ehemaligen Computerspielabhängigen bewusst drei individuelle, ungewöhnliche Passungen zwischen Computerspiel und Spielerbiographie ausgewählt (s.o.), für die sie zunächst ausführliche Analyseergebnisse darstellen.     Abstract: "Die Studie untersucht mittels Cross-Lagged-Panel-Design längsschnittliche Zusammenhänge zwischen gewalthaltiger Bildschirmspielnutzung und Cyberbullying. Zur Erklärung dieser Zusammenhänge werden die Selektions- und die Sozialisationshypothese überprüft. Traditionelles Bullying, Viktimisierung, offene und relationale Aggression werden als mögliche Kovariaten von Cyberbullying mitberücksichtigt. Im Zeitabstand eines Jahres wurden Selbsteinschätzungen von 271 Jugendlichen (10-13 Jahre) zu zwei Messzeitpunkten erhoben. Mittels Strukturgleichungsmodellen konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Nutzung gewalthaltiger Bildschirmspiele ein Risikofaktor für Cyberbullying, traditionelles Bullying und offene Aggression (Sozialisationseffekt) ist.
