Abstract: The role of literature (fictional and non-fictional) and its reflection on the reading process of Soviet Germans is closely connected with Soviet German history up to the present situation. Principally, two reasons are responsible for this: 1) the lack of a satisfying German language competence and of a general interest by the Germans and 2) many problems with the distribution of German language literature. This includes fictional and non-fictional texts. Another result on the basis of 21 in-depth interviews with Soviet German emigrants and of the analysis of the Soviet German press reveals that there exists only very little interest in the Soviet German literature. The Soviet German press, first of all the weekly "Neues Leben", functions as a forum of Soviet German questions dealing with Soviet German history, culture and literature. For many Soviet Germans, "Neues Leben" is the only German language source they read. In reading more literature from East and West Germany the intere

Abstract: Still today for great parts of the German public the German victory at the football world cup in Bern/Switzerland in 1954 is a point of reference when national identification is concerned. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, plenty of belletristic and scientific literary publications, a feature film and audio as well as picture documentations have been produced. Without reference to the respective genre, the majority of these works tends to regard the winning of the world cup as a „myth”, some even take it for an origo myth of a national foundation. Apart from that, a striking feature is the personifying point of view, putting special emphasis on the performance of individual figures (Sepp Herberger, Fritz Walter, Herbert Zimmermann). Approaches that focus on „Bern 1954” as a historic event are rare: Attempts to present the winning of the title against the background of the political history of the young Federal Republic of Germany can sometimes be discovered. Abstract: There is a peculiar relationship between contemporary poetry and perspectives that are deemed to be heretical by conservative audiences. This relationship is not fully accounted for by current anthropological theories of the secular. The field of literature has been successfully studied as a secular institution – both in the sense of the differentiation of institutions as well as in the sense of the subordination of the religious to the political. Such secularity appears as a rather safe, less controversial way to claim the power of some human entities in relation to God. Some poetry, by contrast, may be accused of heresy or unbelief even when written with pious intention. This suggests a dimension to being secular that is more offensive to conservative societal sensibilities, as it contrasts with deeply-held views on the proper form of the God-human relationship and the associated imaginaries, languages, and aesthetics. Based on a combination of ethnographic research in historical
