    Abstract: The migration of older people in search for improved quality of life has become an important form of human mobility, and popular retirement destinations are often highly multilingual settings. This article explores language use and social inclusion in international retirement migration through a case study of Scandinavian retirees in the Alicante province in Spain. It examines the linguistic landscape they meet, their language use and their inclusion in their new home country. Interviews with retired migrants and key local individuals show that many migrants try to learn the host country language, but that these attempts are often not very successful. As a result, they frequently use either their native language or English for everyday communication. This article elaborates on three theoretical and political notions of inclusion - assimilation, multiculturalism and civic integration - and discusses how retired migrants’ language use can be interpreted in the light of these notions

    Abstract: Es wird der geschichtliche Hintergrund und die aktuelle Situation des Kärtner Minderheitenkonflikts beschrieben, indem einige Aspekte des interethnischen Konflikts deutlich gemacht werden. Davon ausgehend, daß die Sprache eine wichtige Rolle in der Ausbildung einer ethnischen Identität spielt, wird der Zusammenhang zwischen Zweisprachigkeit und Identität untersucht, wozu auf Forschungsergebnisse aus der Analyse von zweisprachigen Lebensgeschichten zurückgegriffen wird. Grundlage der weiteren Überlegungen ist die Konzeption der Identitätsbildung durch Kommunikation und Interaktion. Es wird die These diskutiert, daß Zweisprachigkeit - besonders im Alltagsbewußtsein - die Gefahr eines gespaltenen Bewußtseins bedeutet. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird überprüft, ob die zweisprachigen Identitätsformen der Slowenen letztlich auf eine weitere Assimilierung hindeuten oder ob doch Ansätze einer ethnischen Identität, die auch politisches Handeln impliziert, sichtbar sind.     Abstract: This article aims to identify and analyze the variations of Nicolae Ceauşescu’s rhetoric concerning the ”co-inhabiting nationalities” during the 1970s as a legitimacy-seeking gambit. The article argues that two of the key explanatory variables that influenced the escalation of anti-minority discourse and measures were the Romanian-Hungarian interstate relations and the resistance of the ethnic Hungarians in Romania to aggressively assimilationist strategies. This analysis is inscribed into a wider field of research (Critical Discourse Analysis), and is aimed at ascertaining political discourse as a key generator and projector of political-societal developments and determinant of identity formation

    Abstract: Facing migration and integration many Europeans feel confronted with exceptional challenges today. However, historical migration research shows that these processes have always been central elements of European social and cultural history, and it also reveals that many 'native' insiders who today feel anxious about assimilation or even integration of immigrants are themselves the descendants of foreign outsiders. Apart from some well-known exceptions - e.g. the Huguenots - little is known about the multitude and diversity of groups who have moved across political, social, and cultural borders in modern European history. It is the purpose of the Encyclopedia to illuminate the broad spectrum of these migrations by presenting selected examples. Special significance is attached to permanent immigrations within Europe and from outside regions into Europe. Ein Vergleich der migrationspolitischen Debatten in Deutschland und der Schweiz zeigt, dass Homogenitäts- und Assimilationsvorstellungen, ein Relikt aus der Zeit der Nationalstaatenbildung im 19.     Abstract: Angesichts der in den letzten Jahren sprunghaft angestiegenen Einwanderungs- und Flüchtlingszahlen und der damit einhergehenden zunehmenden Interkulturalität der deutschen Bevölkerung wird das Thema Migration zunehmend kontrovers diskutiert. Deshalb sind kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Einstellungen in der interkulturellen Forschung eine häufig betrachtete Thematik. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht differenziert die Zusammenhänge von kultureller Orientierung und den Akkulturationsstrategien Integration, Segregation sowie Assimilation und bezieht die Konstrukte der sozialen Unterstützung, interkulturellen Kompetenz, interkulturellen Freundschaften sowie Lebenszufriedenheit in die Untersuchung mit ein. Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass die Einflussfaktoren auf die Migrationsstrategien sich zwischen russischen und deutschen Probanden stark unterscheiden.
