"The Interactive Past brings together a diverse group of thinkers--including archaeologists, heritage scholars, game creators, conservators and more--who explore the interface of video games and the past in a series of unique and engaging writings. They address such topics as how thinking about and creating games can inform on archaeological method and theory, how to leverage games for the communication of powerful and positive narratives, how games can be studied archaeologically and the challenges they present in terms of conservation, and why the deaths of virtual Romans and the treatment of video game chickens matters. The book also includes a crowd-sourced chapter in the form of a question-chain-game, written by the Kickstarter backers whose donations made this book possible. Together, these exciting and enlightening examples provide a convincing case for how interactive play can power the experience of the past and vice versa."--Page [4] of cover The Interactive Past' brings together a diverse group of thinkers - including archaeologists, heritage scholars, game creators, conservators and more - who explore the interface of video games and the past in a series of unique and engaging writings. We take the built environment for granted; yet we create worlds of meaning through the buildings we construct. Architecture is a powerful medium for representing, ordering and classifying the world. For over a decade archaeologists have been using concepts of the symbolic use of space, but until now there has been no single study of this field, or its interaction with architecture and anthropology. Architecture and Order draws together the work of anthropologists, psychologists, social theorists, architects and archaeologists to explore people's relationships with their architecture. In many societies, houses and tombs have encoded cultural meanings and values which are invoked and recalled through the practices of daily and ritual life. Case studies include the early farming communities of Europe, from before the use of metals, to the Classical and medieval worlds of the Mediterranean and Europe. Studies of the recent past and present include an overview of hunter-gatherers' camp organisation, a reassessment of the use of space amongst the Dogon of West Africa and an examination of mental disorders relating to the use of space in Britain. The book goes beyond the implication that culture determines form to develop an approach which integrates meaning and practice. Architecture and Order is a new approach to the examination of archaeological evidence. It will be essential reading for students of archaeology, anthropology and cultural studies, and will also appeal to students of history and psychology.

Drawing upon a wide range of literary texts from the nineteenth century to the present, the book offers new approaches to understanding storytelling and narrative in archaeology, and the role of archaeological methods in literature and literary criticism. Across the book's 10 chapters - ranging from Thomas Hardy and H.P. Lovecraft to Zadie Smith and Paul Beatty, from new genetic insights into prehistoric man and the deepening record of our changing human environment - scholars from across disciplines are brought into dialogue, making innovative connections to concepts, methodologies and practices of cultural understanding"--

The Interactive Past' brings together a diverse group of thinkers - including archaeologists, heritage scholars, game creators, conservators and more - who explore the interface of video games and the past in a series of unique and engaging writings. Together, these exciting and enlightening examples provide a convincing case for how interactive play can power the experience of the past and vice versa

The book focuses on the relational dynamic between “masters” and “natives” in the construction of scholarly narratives about the past, in the fields of archeology, history or the study of religions. Reconsidering the role of subaltern actors that recent postcolonial studies have tended to ignore, the present book emphasizes the complex relations between representatives of the imperial power and local actors, and analyzes how masters and natives (and their respective cultures) have shaped each other in the course of the interaction. Through various vectors of intercultural transfer and knowledge exchange, through the circulation of ideas, techniques and human beings, new visions of the past of extra-European regions emerged, as did collective memories resulting from various kinds of appropriations. In this framework, the most important question is how these dynamic processes determined collective memories of the past in plural (post-)colonial – in particular, Asian – worlds, participating to the construction of national/imperial/local identities and to the reinvention of traditions Frontmatter -- Acknowledgements -- Contents -- Note on Transliteration -- Preface / Schnapp, Alain -- Introduction / Gorshenina, Svetlana / Bornet, Philippe / Fuchs, Michel E. / Rapin, Claude -- Archaeology in the Time of Empires: Unequal Negotiations and Scientific Competition -- “Masters” Against “Natives”: Edward Daniel Clarke and the “Theft” of the Eleusinian “Goddess” / Reber, Karl -- Russian Archaeologists, Colonial Administrators, and the “Natives” of Turkestan: Revisiting the History of Archaeology in Central Asia / Gorshenina, Svetlana -- The “Maîtres” of Archaeology in Eastern Turkestan: Divide et Impera / Bukharin, Mikhail -- “Master” / “Native”: Are There Winners?
