In addition to being a medical, political, and social crisis, the AIDS epidemic in the United States also led to a crisis of artistic representation. This book reveals the important political and moral role of American photographers in the social discourse on AIDS based on the 1989 New York exhibition, "Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing" curated by photographer Nan Goldin

Main description: »Camp Comforts« investigates the wide-ranging impact of camp on AIDS literature and places this impact within two different traditions of camp analysis: a politically subversive one that aims at social change and an aesthetically uplifting one that aims at personal healing. Christian Lassen argues that camp may in fact serve both ends, social change and personal healing, and goes on to explore reparative reading practices in order to rehabilitate alleviation and relief as vital objectives in literary representations of gay grief. In this way, »Camp Comforts« reveals the workings that make camp so crucial a strategy for survival in times of AIDS.

Coleridge's Aids to Reflection was written at a time when new movements in thought were starting to unsettle belief. It was read with admiration by early Victorians such as John Sterling, F. D. Maurice, and Thomas Arnold, contributing to the formation of the Broad Church Movement, and with respect by members of the High Church Movement, including John Henry Newman. Coleridge had intended simply to produce a selection from the writings of the seventeenth-century Archbishop Robert Leighton with comments of his own, but as he worked at the book he found the commentary expanding to take in the fruits of his religious thinking over the years, so that the second, and more important, part of the volume was totally dominated by his thought. In this, the first major edition of Aids to Reflection, the intricate story of Coleridge's changing conception is unfolded by way of an introduction and detailed notes, the surviving materials for the volume being printed in appendixes. The introduction also traces the subsequent influence of the work in England and America; further appendixes include James Marsh's influential preface to the first American edition, which is reproduced in full.Originally published in 1993.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

Offering a comprehensive analysis of mediated representations of global pandemics, this book engages with the construction, management, and classification of difference in the global context of a pandemic, to address what it means – culturally, politically, and economically – to live in an infected, diseased body. Marina Levina argues that mediated representations are essential in translating and making sense of difference as a category of subjectivity and as a mode of organizing and distributing change. Using textual analysis of media texts on pandemics and disease, she illustrates how they represent a larger mediascape that drafts stories of global instabilities and global health. Levina explains how the stories we tell about disease matter; that the media is instrumental in constructing and disseminating these stories; and that mediated narratives of pandemics are rooted in global flows of policies, commerce, and populations. Pandemics are, by definition, global crises. «‘Pandemics and the Media’ deftly examines the intersection of politics, popular culture, economics, and technology to provide insight into the global preoccupation with pandemics. Marina Levina investigates the moral implications and cautionary tales underwriting fears of contamination, carefully scrutinizing how meaning is crafted and circulated through various media. The provocative case studies explore everything from the promiscuous bites of vampires to the geopolitical panic of zombie narratives to the fragility of national security in popular films about contagions.» (Jeffrey Bennett, author of ‘Banning Queer Blood: Rhetorics of Citizenship, Contagion, and Resistance’) «In this exceptionally well-researched and thoughtful book, Marina Levina reminds us that pandemics tell us as much about culture, economic relations, and political commitments as they do about any ‘brute facts’ of the biological body. And those commitments matter. During a time when we see growing disparities in the distribution of basic material resources and when fear of contagion is used to justify policies and interventions based on implicit notions of the body as a racialized and sexualized threat, we need the kind of courageous scholarship that ‘Pandemics and the Media’ exemplifies. Levina’s intellectual engagement with our most fundamental beliefs about risk, vulnerability, the normal, and the pathological is a necessary first step toward realizing a critical, affirmative biopolitics.» (Kelly Happe, author of ‘The Material Gene: Gender, Race, and Heredity after the Human Genome Project’)...

South Africa is one of the countries in the world most affected by HIV/AIDS, and yet, until recently, the epidemic was barely visible in South African literature. Much can be gained from approaching the South African epidemic through creative texts such as novels, photographs, films, cartoons and murals because they produce and circulate meanings of HIV/AIDS and its various facets such as its 'origin', 'transmission routes' and 'physical manifestations'. Other aspects explored are the denial of HIV/AIDS, its stigmatisation, discriminatory practices, modes of disclosure, access to anti-retroviral medication, as well as the role of alternative treatment. Creative texts, which are open to different and possibly contradictory readings, can serve as a starting point to increase the cultural visibility of the virus and to challenge dominant ideas about the epidemic. The cultural constructions of HIV/AIDS should be carefully examined because the meanings are pervasive and have very 'real' consequences: they play a powerful role both in determining which issues receive attention and in shaping public understanding of the virus. Ellen Grünkemeier is a lecturer and researcher in the English Department at Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany. Her publications include two co-edited volumes on postcolonial literatures and cultures, 'Listening to Africa. Anglophone African Literatures and Cultures' (2012), and 'Postcolonial Studies across the Disciplines' (ASNEL Papers 19, forthcoming).
