    "The Muslim as a cultural category has come under increasing, most often hostile, scrutiny in Euro-America over the last four decades or so. As a result, the field of Muslim literary studies has emerged to shine a spotlight on the exciting body of literature by authors of Muslim heritage writing back to Islamophobic stereotypes. However, this academic oeuvre too often assumes that this literature is a contemporary, broadly post-9/11 phenomenon. In this important book, Claire Chambers takes a long view of depictions of Britain by writers from Muslim backgrounds. The book's first half focuses on travel and life writing from the eighteenth to the mid twentieth centuries by authors such as Mirza Sheikh I'tesamuddin, Najaf Koolee Meerza, and Atiya Fyzee. In the second half, she trains her critical gaze on the long tradition of fictional representations, from Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq's Leg Over Leg (1855) to Ahdaf Soueif's Aisha (1983) and Abdulrazak Gurnah's Pilgrims Way (1988). Chambers argues that the Rushdie affair has been more of a turning point on perceptions of and by Muslims in Britain than 9/11. Her next book in this two-part series, Muslim Representations of Britain, 1988-Present, will therefore start with discussion of Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses (1988) and move to examination of the long shadow this text has cast on subsequent Muslim literary representations"--

Aber macht er die Welt auch wirklich besser? Helen Pluckrose und James Lindsay begeben sich in ihrem Bestseller auf die Spuren eines wissenschaftlichen Aktivismus, der überall nur noch Feinde sieht. Postmoderne Denker wie Michel Foucault oder Jacques Derrida haben die Strukturen westlicher Gesellschaften so tiefgreifend dekonstruiert wie niemand vor ihnen. Ihr radikaler Skeptizismus hatte jedoch einen Preis. Helen Pluckrose und James Lindsay zeichnen in ihrem kontroversen Buch nach, wie die Grundannahmen der postmodernen Theorie seit den 1980er Jahren im Postkolonialismus, in der Critical-Race-Theorie, im intersektionalen Feminismus, in den Gender Studies und in der Queer-Theorie für den politischen Aktivismus scharf gemacht wurden.     Der Begriff "Kollektive Identität" hat einen Boom. In Amerika beglaubigt er die Identity Politics von rassischen, ethnischen und geschlechtlichen Gruppen und auf dem alten Kontinent alles von der europäischen bis zur friesischen Identität: Mal ist er eine Formel des Multikulturalismus oder eines postnationalen Weltbürgertums, mal dient er als Mahnung zu neuem Patriotismus oder auch als Schlachtruf der nationalistischen Rechten. Dieses Buch verfolgt ihre Spuren bei fünf Stichwortgebern des 20. Jahrhunderts: Carl Schmitt, Georg Lukacs, Sigmund Freud, Maurice Halbwachs und Aldous Huxley Niethammer, Zeithistoriker aus Jena (zuletzt "Deutschland danach" ID 12/00), legt hier ein begriffsgeschichtliches Werk vor, das weit über das Fach Geschichte hinausreicht und im besten Sinne sozialwissenschaftlich ist. Der Begriff "kollektive Identität", manchmal auch "nationale Identität", hat Konjunktur und Niethammer arbeitet hier minutiös heraus, bei welchen Denkern (Schmitt, Jung, Freud, Erikson u.a.) der Begriff zuerst eine Rolle spielte und wie er in die öffentliche Diskussion in Politik und Medien wanderte und dort nun eine unhinterfragte Existenz genießt, obwohl er als ein konstruierter Sachverhalt in der Realität keine Entsprechung findet.     Die vorliegende Studie ergänzt den Forschungsstand zur Wirkung visueller Kommunikation politischer Akteure durch eine innovative Methodenkombination aus Eye-Tracking und Real-Time-Response-Messung. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern nonverbales Verhalten sowohl die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit als auch die (spontanen) Urteile von RezipientInnen beeinflusst. Außerdem wird der Zusammenhang aus Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung analysiert. Dazu sahen TeilnehmerInnen der Studie Videos von Politikerreden entweder mit oder ohne Ton. Befunde zeigen, dass spezifisches körpersprachliches Verhalten (z.B. emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke oder Handgesten) zum einen die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit lenkt. Zum anderen haben sowohl verbale Äußerungen als auch nonverbales Verhalten Auswirkungen auf die spontane Urteilsbildung über Politiker. Effekte nonverbaler Kommunikation treten insbesondere dann auf, wenn kein Ton verfügbar ist. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einzelne Zusammenhänge zwischen Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung hin This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation
