"The initial publication of The Great White Way was and remains the first and only book-length investigation into the ways in which race and ethnicity have shaped the American musical over the course of the twentieth century up through today. In addition to the musicals mentioned above, the book contains analyses of Tony Award-winning shows A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, and The Will Rogers Follies, as well as an examination of the role of casting practices in the musical, particularly the phenomenon of African American and interracial productions of Broadway musicals. Now updated to include a discussion of the blockbuster musicals Hamilton and The Book of Mormon, as well as other developments of the musical in recent years, The Great White Way provides both lovers of the musical and academics with a probing looking at the ways in which issues of race and ethnicity shape this all-American art form." This second edition will reflect new developments that have occurred in the world of the Broadway musical in recent years. Chapter four will be revised and an entire new chapter will be added about smash hits The Book of Mormon and Hamilton, which are both incredibly important when analyzing race and the Broadway musical. Hoffman will also include a new Afterword that will bring the book up to the 21st century and elaborate on what is happening off-Broadway as well"--

Broadway musicals are one of America's most beloved art forms and play to millions of people each year. But what do these shows, which are often thought to be just frothy entertainment, really have to say about our country and who we are as a nation?"The Great White Way" is the first book to reveal the racial politics, content, and subtexts that have haunted musicals for almost one hundred years from "Show Boat" (1927) to "The Scottsboro Boys" (2011). Musicals mirror their time periods and reflect the political and social issues of their day. Warren Hoffman investigates the thematic content of the Broadway musical and considers how musicals work on a structural level, allowing them to simultaneously present and hide their racial agendas in plain view of their audiences. While the musical is informed by the cultural contributions of African Americans and Jewish immigrants, Hoffman argues that ultimately the history of the American musical is the history of white identity in the United States.Presented chronologically, "The Great White Way" shows how perceptions of race altered over time and how musicals dealt with those changes. Hoffman focuses first on shows leading up to and comprising the Golden Age of Broadway (1927-1960s), then turns his attention to the revivals and nostalgic vehicles that defined the final quarter of the twentieth century. He offers entirely new and surprising takes on shows from the American musical canon--"Show Boat" (1927), "Oklahoma!" (1943), "Annie Get Your""Gun" (1946), "The Music Man" (1957), "West Side Story" (1957), "A Chorus Line" (1975), and "42nd Street" (1980), among others. New archival research on the creators who produced and wrote these shows, including Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, and Edward Kleban, will have theater fans and scholars rethinking forever how they view this popular American entertainment.

""Victorians on Broadway" is a wide-ranging interdisciplinary study of live stage musicals from the mid- to late twentieth century adapted from British literature written between 1837 and 1886. Investigating musical dramatizations of works by Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, Christina Rossetti, Robert Louis Stevenson, and others, Weltman considers what cultural and interpretive work adaptations such as "The King and I" (1951), "Oliver!" (1960), "Sweeney Todd" (1979), and "Jekyll and Hyde" (1997) accomplish when they are adapted for the Broadway stage. In addition, Weltman examines what these musicals teach us about the Victorian books from which they derive. "Victorians on Broadway" also provides us with a great deal of background theater history, making sure that we can understand how "the American musical" developed its own generic specificity. The book moves chronologically, reflecting the major developments in American musical theater, and Victorian-sourced Broadway musical adaptations have been produced at each stage: the Golden Age of Broadway, the musical theater experiments of the 1970s and 1980s that focus as much on concept as story (exemplified by Stephen Sondheim), and the era of pop megamusicals, revealing the Broadway musical's debt to melodrama. Organizing these chapters chronologically situates the adaptations within the history of musical theater and focuses attention on how they fit into aesthetic and intellectual movements

In her pioneering study, "Music in the shadows", film noir expert Sheri Chinen Biesen explores musical films that use film noir style and bluesy strains of jazz to inhabit a disturbing underworld and reveal the dark side of fame and the American dream. While many musicals glamorize the quest for the spotlight in Hollywood's star factory, brooding noir musical films such as "Blues in the night", "Gilda", "The red shoes", "West side story", and "Round midnight" stretch the boundaries of film noir and the musical as film genres collide. Their narratives unfold behind a stark lens: distorted, erratic angles and imbalanced hand-held shots allow the audience to experience a tortured, disillusioned perspective. Deep shadows, dim lightning, and visual composition evoke moodiness, cynicism, pessimism, and subjective psychological points of view. As in her earlier study of film noir, "Blackout: World War II and the origins of film noir", Biesen draws on extensive primary research in studio archives to situate her examination within a historical, industrial, and cultural context.
