The legacy of European colonialism in the Caribbean is explored through the work of 10 contemporary artists: Angel Otero, Adler Guerrier, Phillip Thomas, Leonardo Benzant, Lucia Hierro, Lavar Munroe, Andrea Chung, Ebony Patterson, Didier William, and Firelei Baez. Their work is inspired by products that have historically been produced in and exported from the Caribbean. The book, published to accompany a traveling exhibition opening at San Francisco's Museum of the African Diaspora, explores the complexity of the "postcolonialism paradox"-in which colonizers often felt superior and productive as they claimed territory for themselves while subjugating indigenous people and exploiting their land. Whether connected to the Caribbean by birth or by choice, the artists use their work as a means of examining the relationships within the power structure.00Exhibition: Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, USA (08.05.-11.08.2019)

"The Caribbean diaspora is a global phenomenon that transgresses political boundaries, identities, and histories. Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora 1990s-Today challenges conventional representations of Caribbean art, focusing on art of the diaspora rather than art defined by static geographic, ethnic, linguistic, and historical categories. Featuring essays by a group of multi-dimensional authors and works by an intergenerational group of artists living and working in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Great Britain, France, the expanded Caribbean Basin, and the island nations of the Caribbean, the catalogue is informed by Caribbean intellectual traditions, diaspora studies, and Black and alternative geographies of fugitivity"--

Anew: to the future, via the past / Alex Farquharson -- Caribbean movements in Britain / David A. Bailey -- Stuart Hall's vernacular modernism / David Scott -- Nature erupts into orchestras of nemesis: the ecological imaginary of the Caribbean / Giulia Smith -- Colour bars and bass cultures, dub aesthetics and Cockney translations: music in the Creole history of Black life in Britain / Paul Gilroy -- Movement of people / a rhythm sequence by Grace Wales Bonner -- Comin rite thru: masquerade and marches, resistance and revolution / Allison Thompson -- Home and away: odysseys, entanglements and acts of resistance / Gilane Tawadros -- Hostile environments and Black geographies / Daniella Rose King. "This fascinating exhibition book traces the connection between Britain and the Caribbean in the visual arts from the 1950s to today, a social and cultural history more often told through literature or popular music. It celebrates how people from the Caribbean have forged new communities and identities in post-war Britain - and in doing so have transformed British culture and society. ...Arranged chronologically, it sheds light on a number of themes such as Caribbean modernism, social and political struggles, subculture and its policing, the front room as a private and public space, after-images of slavery and the Middle Passage, and syncretic and creolised metaphor and allegory (carnival, folklore, new world religions). Readers will find themselves charting a course between two worlds: London or other urban localities in the UK and images of formerly British Caribbean nations."

Unprecedented in scope, this beautiful book offers an authoritative examination of the modern history of the Caribbean through its artistic culture. Featuring 500 color illustrations of artworks from the late 18th through the 21st century, the book explores modern and contemporary art, ranging from the Haitian revolution to the present. Acknowledging both the individuality of each island, the richness of the coastal regions, and the reach of the Diaspora, Caribbean looks at the vital visual and cultural links that exist among these diverse constituencies. The authors examine how the Caribbean has been imagined and pictured, and the role of art in the development of national identity. Essays by leading scholars cover such topics as the interconnections between Caribbean artistic production to its colonial contexts; between various generations of artists; and between the so-called high and low arts and religion, music, and carnival celebrations. Primary source documents crucial to understanding the region provide an important complement. -- Publisher description
