    Donatello schuf zwischen 1415 und 1436 fünf Prophetenstatuen für den Glockenturm der im Bau befindlichen Florentiner Kathedrale. Die Statuen waren Teil eines umfassenden Skulpturenprogramms am Campanile, das im 14. Jahrhundert unvollendet gelassen worden war: von den 16 Nischen an den vier Seiten des Turmes waren acht noch leer, als Donatello und andere Bildhauer der Dombauhütte Aufträge für die noch fehlenden Stücke erhielten. Diese Studie setzt zwei Schwerpunkte: zunächst wird das spätmittelalterliche Figurenprogramm des Campanile näher betrachtet im Hinblick auf seine stadtpolitische und religiös-heilsgeschichtliche Bedeutung. Der Vergleich mit ähnlichen Bildprogrammen in Italien und nördlich der Alpen zeigt, dass der Campanile mit seinem Bildschmuck stolzes Zeichen des Selbstbewusstseins von Florenz und zugleich Ausdruck der politischen und religiösen Ordnung war. Die Figuren von Königen und Propheten in den Nischen des Turmes stehen als Vorbilder und Mahner einer guten Regierung; zwei Sibyllenstatuen verheißen der Stadt Größe und Ruhm. Allerdings scheint sich die politische Bedeutung von Propheten in der Folgezeit allmählich zu verlieren, denn in der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts lässt sich in Florenz eine wahre Flut von Prophetenbildern mit eher dekorativem Charakter beobachten. In einem zweiten Schritt wird daher die Bedeutung von Propheten und Sibyllen im Mittelalter untersucht. Ihre große Popularität in der Kunst und Literatur verdankten sie einerseits den zahlreichen Sibyllenorakeln, welche laufend aktualisiert und von verschiedenen Interessengruppen zu politischen Zwecken genutzt wurden. Andererseits traten Propheten in geistlichen Schauspielen (Prophetenspielen) auf, wobei bemerkenswerte Ähnlichkeiten mit den Prophetenfiguren in der bildenden Kunst zu beobachten sind. Daher bieten die Prophetenspiele auch eine mögliche Erklärung nicht nur für die auffallend lebhaft, eindringlich und dramatisch gestalteten Prophetenbilder des Mittelalters, vom Klosterneuburger Altar über Giovanni Pisano bis zu Claus Sluter, sondern ebenso für die Prophetenstatuen Donatellos am Florentiner Campanile.
