    Si l'histoire des rapports entre Paris et New York est bien connue, celle des relations entre Paris et Dakar l'est beaucoup moins. Entre la France et le Sénégal, la circulation des objets, des artistes et des idées atteste des rapports de force qui agitèrent la scène artistique dans les années 1950 à 1970, marquées par le processus de décolonisation et la guerre froide. De l'élaboration d'un art moderne national au Sénégal, à la contestation de la politique de coopération mise en place entre les deux pays, des expositions "Picasso" ou "Soulages" organisées à Dakar dans les années 1970, à l'exposition d'art contemporain sénégalais organisée à Paris en 1974, une géopolitique des arts se mettait en place, au cœur de laquelle plasticiens et cinéastes jouèrent un rôle actif. Transnational et transhistorique, cet ouvrage s'inscrit dans le champ d'une histoire de l'art mondialisée, et invite à décentrer les regards pour envisager l'histoire de l'art de ces années à nouveaux frais. Il permet également de repenser l'historiographie communément admise au sujet de la globalisation de l'art contemporain, en démontrant que "tout" ne commence pas dans les années 1990. - Rückumschlag

Marcel Duchamp hatte mit seinen Readymades den Kunstbetrieb in eine Debatte über In- und Exklusion von Alltagsdingen in die ‚Hochkunst‘ verstrickt. Seitdem kann man mit Arthur Danto vom „Ende der Kunst“ sprechen. Duchamps Kunst-Erweiterung führte zu einer explosionsartigen Vermehrung von Kunstgegenständen und -begriffen, die bis in die Gegenwart anhält. Ferner provozieren Bilder und Objekte aus Nicht-Kunst-Bereichen mit eigener Tradition das Kunstsystem, indem sie Kunstkriterien adaptieren. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes handeln von Provokationen und Interventionen, den Transfers bzw. Vermischungen der Bild- und Objektkulturen und erforschen Bilder, Objekte und Aktionen in ihren kulturellen Kontexten, um dem sich in Auflösung befindenden Kunstsystem auf den Grund zu gehen Images are not born as art. With his ready-mades Marcel Duchamp embro-iled the art business in a debate about the inclusion and exclusion of every-day objects in ‘high’ art. Since then, it has been possible to cite Arthur Danto and talk of the „end of art“. In retros-pect it becomes clear that Duchamp’s expansion of what constitutes art resulted in an explosive increase of art objects and concepts of art, a trend still evident today. Moreover, images and objects from non-art areas with their own tradition provoke the art system by adapting art criteria. The contributions in this book address pro-vocations and interventions, the trans-fer or melding of image and object cultures and explore images, objects and actions in their cultural contexts to get to the bottom of the art system that is in a state of dissolution

    From the 1880s to 1940, French colonial officials, businessmen and soldiers, returning from overseas postings, brought home wooden masks and figures from Africa. This imperial and cultural power-play is the jumping-off point for a story that travels from sub-Saharan Africa to Parisian art galleries; from the pages of fashion magazines, through the doors of the Louvre, to world fairs and international auction rooms; into the apartments of avant-garde critics and poets; to the streets of Harlem, and then full-circle back to colonial museums and schools in Dakar, Bamako, and Abidjan. John Warne Monroe guides us on this journey, one that goes far beyond the world of Picasso, Matisse, and Braque, to show how the Modernist avant-garde and the European colonial project influenced each other in profound and unexpected ways. Metropolitan Fetish reveals the complex trajectory of African material culture in the West and provides a map of that passage, tracing the interaction of cultural and imperial power. A broad and far-reaching history of the French reception of African art, it brings to life an era in which the aesthetic category of "primitive art" was invented

    The role played by the book trade in the diffusion of artistic and architectural theory, fashion and practice is explored, while other essays trace the impact on the appearance of books themselves of aesthetic trends and of advances in the techniques of binding, colour printing and illustration. Among topics discussed are the printed sources for decorative motifs in 16th-century churches, the publication history of the works of Andrea Palladio, and the evolution of drawing manuals in 17th-century England. Other subjects include the library formed by the architect Sir John Soane, developments in 19th-century art publishing, and the role of printed catalogues in documenting the acquisitions made by English collectors of paintings, sculpture and antiquities
