    ger: Ziel der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit war die Herausarbeitung der Luxuskonzeption im „Journal des Luxus und der Moden“ und ihre Einbettung in die zeitgenössischen Debatten, in erster Linie die neuzeitliche Luxusdebatte. Dazu wurde die Arbeit in einen theoretischen und analytischen Teil gegliedert. Der erste Teil diente der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik Luxus, der Luxusdebatte im 18. Jahrhundert und dem „Journal des Luxus und der Moden“.
    Die Analyse und Interpretation von ausgewählten Artikeln im zweiten Teil der Arbeit haben schließlich ergeben, dass sich die Berichterstattung über Luxus im Wesentlichen auf dem materiellen Luxus, der Definition und Bewertung von Luxus und dem Zusammenhang zwischen Luxus und Ökonomie beschränken. Diese drei Bereiche spiegeln die wichtigsten Topoi der neuzeitlichen Luxusdebatte wider und wurden aus diesem Grund für die Gliederung und Bearbeitung der Artikel herangezogen.
    Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass die Luxuskonzeption im „Journal des Luxus und der Moden“ sehr unterschiedlich ausfiel und Luxus nicht ausschließlich positiv bewertet wurde, was der Titel des Journals suggerieren könnte. Vielmehr kann das Journal als gesellschaftlicher Diskurs über Luxus verstanden werden, das unterschiedlichste Argumentationsweisen zur Bewertung von Luxus zulässt und somit ganz in der Tradition der Luxusdebatte des 18. Jahrhunderts steht. In diesem Sinne kann man also anstelle von einer Luxuskonzeption, vielmehr von Luxuskonzeptionen sprechen, die von den unterschiedlichsten Einstellungen zu Luxus zeugen und im Kontext der Debatten einer aufgeklärten Gesellschaft alle ihre Daseinsberechtigung haben. eng: The debate and concept of luxury in the German journal "Journal des Luxus und der Moden".

    Although it has long been recognized that gay people appear to have a special relationship with fashion and style, this will be the first book to look at the history of fashion through a queer lens and to explore the "gayness" or "queerness" of fashion. The book will explore the importance of gay men as fashion designers from the 1930s to the present, including the contributions to fashion history of gay designers such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen. Bisexual and lesbian designers and other fashion professionals will also be considered. In addition, the book will document the creativity and resistance to oppression expressed by LGBTQ (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-queer) sub-cultural styles, which have often transgressed sex and gender norms. Finally, the book will explore the influence of a queer sensibility, queer aesthetic(s), and queer sub-cultural styles on fashion over the past century. From Christian Dior to Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, many of the greatest fashion designers of the past century have been gay. Fashion and style have played an important role within the LGBTQ community, as well, even as early as the 18th century. This provocative book looks at the history of fashion through a queer lens, examining high fashion as a site of gay cultural production and exploring the aesthetic sensibilities and unconventional dress of LGBTQ people, especially since the 1950s, to demonstrate the centrality of gay culture to the creation of modern fashion. Contributions by some of the world's most acclaimed scholars of gay history and fashion - including Christopher Breward, Shaun Cole, Vicki Karaminas, Jonathan D. Katz, Peter McNeil, and Elizabeth Wilson - investigate topics such as the context in which key designers' lives and works form part of a broader "gay" history; the "archeology" of queer attire back to the homosexual underworld of 18th-century Europe; and the influence of LGBTQ subcultural styles from the trouser suits worn by Marlene Dietrich (which inspired Yves Saint Laurent's "Le Smoking") to the iconography of leather. Sumptuous illustrations include both fashion photography and archival imagery.

Doch wenn sich Frauen wie Männer anziehen, ziehen sich dann beide gleich an? (buchhandel.de) Die international bekannte Literaturwissenschaftlerin Barbara Vinken, die 2001 mit ihrem Pamphlet "Die deutsche Mutter" für Aufmerksamkeit sorgte, weil sie für die deutschen Frauen mehr Rigorosität in der Lebensplanung einforderte (Stichwort: alle sollen ganztags arbeiten!), bietet in ihrem neuen Werk einen überraschenden, oft amüsanten Überblick über die Geschichte der Mode. Ausgangspunkt bildet ihre Unterscheidung zwischen Männer- und Frauenmode, die sich beide im Laufe der Jahrhundert immer mehr ins andere Lager entwickelt haben: früher zeigte der Mann "Bein" und "Po" und somit seine Reize, die Frau versteckte ihre unter weit ausladenden Röcken. Heute ist es genau umgekehrt. Wie es dazu kommen konnte und welche Aussagen und Statements hinter Stoffen und Schnitten versteckt liegen, zeigt uns die Autorin klug und fundiert recherchiert. Im Fokus liegen bei ihr die Haute Couture und die Trends der Designer, etwas außer Acht lässt sie die Entwicklung der Straßenmode. Trotzdem eine außergewöhnliche Lektüre, die jeden Modebewussten mit neuem Blick auf sein bekleidetes Gegenüber entlässt. Ab mittleren Beständen sehr gerne empfohlen, da bisher kein Vergleichstitel.
