    Main description: This volume, based on a colloquium at the Gleim House in Halberstadt, assembles articles devoted to the relationship between rococo literature, Anacreontic tendencies, and Empfindsamkeit (the age of Sensibility) in the Old Empire. They concentrate largely on the period between 1740 and 1780, four decades notable for inter-discursive cross-fertilization between art theory, anthropology, and aesthetics.     Main description: The positive revaluation of aesthesis and the emergence of aesthetics in the 18th century - from Bodmer and Breitinger to Baumgarten, Meier and ultimately Herder - established an aesthetic discourse centred on the sensual component of art and literature. In literature, this component is to be found in its visual imagery, its rhythms and also in its appreciation as a meaningful structure. The volume contains studies on Gryphius, Klopstock, Lessing, Wieland, Herder and Schiller. It systematizes the insights gained from these studies to demonstrate how, in the 17th and 18th centuries, aesthetic experience was enriched by a theoretical concern for its sensual aspects and conceptualized in a manner that is of essential importance for approaches to the interpretation of art and for hermeneutics

    Die Studie beschreibt das begriffliche und metaphorische Feld dessen, was in der Aufklärung als Tastsinn/Gefühl figuriert. Dabei bezieht sie sich auf ein Phänomen, dessen operative und physiologische Bestimmung in Frage steht. Denn wo dieser Sinn anatomisch zu verorten und wie seine Funktion zu spezifizieren sei, stellt sich in Anbetracht der diskutierten Ansätze vor allem als ein Problem dar. Das zugrundegelegte Korpus umfasst literarische, philosophische und naturkundliche Texte. Diese werden einer Lektüre unterzogen, die unter Rekurs auf systematische Begriffe die Vielschichtigkeit des Gegenstandes auszuloten ermöglicht The study describes the conceptual and metaphorical field relating to what figures in the Enlightenment as the sense of touch/feeling. In so doing it homes in on a phenomenon whose operative and physiological definition is anything but straightforward. The approaches discussed here indicate the problems involved in situating this sense in anatomical terms and specifying its function. The corpus of texts underlying the study is taken from literature, philosophy, and natural history. These are subjected to a reading that makes it possible to examine the complex nature of the issue in question by drawing upon systematic concepts

    Main description: Als "innerweltliche Askese" beschrieb Max Weber die reformierte Religion und Lebensführung. Für deutsche und "frankophone" Texte (Lehrbücher, Essays, Periodika, Reden/Rededramen, philosophische Romane) des ausgehenden 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt diese vergleichende, literatur- und denkgeschichtliche Untersuchung, daß die Beschreibung Webers zwar zutrifft, aber zu kurz greift. Reformierte Morallehren stehen nicht nur am aufklärerischen (Wieder-)Beginn der deutschen Literatur, sondern prüfen die eigene Moral bereits "empirisch" und im Mittel der Literatur, um ihre Grenzen aufzuzeigen

    Main description: Max Weber referred to Reformed religion and life-style as 'interior asceticism'. With reference to Francophone texts of the late 17th and the 18th century (instruction manuals, essays, periodicals, speeches/speech drama, philosophical novels), this comparative study on the history of literature and ideas shows that Weber's description, though accurate, does not go far enough. Reformed moral teaching stands not only at the (new) beginning of German literature in the age of Enlightenment, it also scrutinizes its own morality both at the 'empirical' level and in its dissemination through literature with a view to indicating its limitations

    Main description: In terms of the moral strictures of German enlightenment, knowledge of human nature was equivalent to judgment on it. The study demonstrates that moral narratives exemplify the resulting epistemological problem besetting moral philosophy, social ethics, and anthropology: the impossibility of truly knowing the Other. They reflect and engage with the contradiction between morals, morality, and judgment inherent in the philosophy of the Enlightenment. By combining morality and behavioural doctrine with a fictional view of the inner life of the Other they compensate for the lack of human knowledge prevalent at the end of the 18th century

    Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht über zwei Jahrhunderte hinweg den Verhandlungsprozeß, der um die Grenzen und Lizenzen "satirischen" Schreibens geführt wird: Literatur und Poetik kommunizieren mit dem Recht, der Medizin, der Pädagogik oder der Theologie ihrer Zeit. In Theoriebildung und Praxis zeigt sich die produktive Kraft des kulturellen Aggressionstabus. Drei Einzelanalysen literarischer Texte - von Christian Thomasius (1695), aus Bodmer/Breitingers »Mahler der Sitten« (1746) und von Theodor Haecker (1927) -, die solche Verhandlungen in sich selbst austragen, schließen die Untersuchung ab This study investigates the negotiation process involved in the definition of the latitude and license permissible in 'satirical' writing over a period of more than 200 years. Literature and literary theory are observed in communicative interaction with contemporary law, medicine, pedagogics and theology. The productive force inherent in the cultural taboo imposed on aggression manifests itself in theory formation and practice. The investigation closes with analyses of three texts enacting such negotiations in a literary form: Christian Thomasius' ;Ostergedancken+ (1695), an excerpt from Bodmer/Breitinger's 'Mahler der Sitten' (1746), and Theodor Haecker's 'Dialog über die Satire' (1927)

    Die deutschsprachige Kunstkritik entsteht in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts in Gelehrtenjournalen, Rezensionsorganen und literarischen Zeitschriften und orientiert sich dabei an französischer Kunsttheorie und Salonkritik. Während regelmäßig veranstaltete Akademieausstellungen im Louvre als Kristallisationspunkt der Gesellschaft fungieren und die französische Salonkritik herausbilden, regen die sich wandelnde Öffentlichkeitsstruktur, Museumsgründungen sowie Ausstellungsorganisationen in Deutschland ab den 1760er Jahren erst das ,Gespräch über Kunst' an und bilden allmählich unterschiedliche Typen von Kunstkritik aus. Obwohl sich das Museums- und Ausstellungswesen und der deutsche Kunstmarkt bis Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts nur teilweise entwickeln, ist die mediale Ausdifferenzierung des Zeitschriftenwesens zum Verweissystem periodischer Kunstberichterstattung um 1780 abgeschlossen: eine direkte Folge der Dezentralisierung der deutschen Kunstszene(n). Denn der geografisch und politisch zersplitterte deutsche Raum wird medial durch das Zeitschriftenwesen vernetzt. Kunstbeiträge und kunstkritische Stellungnahmen häufen sich ab der Jahrhundertmitte in den Periodika und beziehen sich nun auch kritisch aufeinander. Die Kunstkritik erfährt im überregional kunstbezogenen Binnendiskurs eine quantitative und qualitative Wandlung. So bildet sich im Medium der Zeitschrift die Kritikfähigkeit aus; zugleich erfährt die Kunstkritik eine Komplexitätssteigerung und wird selbstbezüglich, indem sie ihre Kritiknormen und Umgangsformen im kunstkritischen Diskurs reflektiert und sich als metareflexive Kunstkritik etabliert

    This study analyzes how the imagination of the epic genre as legitimately legitimating community also unleashes an ambivalence between telling coherent - and hence legitimating - stories of political community and narrating open-ended stories of contingency that might de-legitimate political power. Manifest in eighteenth-century poetics above all in the disjunction between programmatic definitions of the epic and actual experiments with the genre, this ambivalence can also arise within a single epic over the course of its narrative. The present study thus traces how particular eighteenth-century epics explore an originary incompleteness of political power and its narrative legitimations. The first chapter sketches an overview of how eighteenth-century writers construct an imaginary epic genre that is assigned the task of performing the cultural work of legitimating political communities by narrating their allegedly unifying origins and borders. The subsequent chapters, however, explore how the practice of epic storytelling in works by Klopstock, Goethe, Wieland, and, in an epilogue, Brentano enact the disruptive potential of poetic language and narrative to question the legitimations of imaginary political origins and unities

    Die Studie beschreibt das begriffliche und metaphorische Feld dessen, was in der Aufklärung als Tastsinn/Gefühl figuriert. Dabei bezieht sie sich auf ein Phänomen, dessen operative und physiologische Bestimmung in Frage steht. Denn wo dieser Sinn anatomisch zu verorten und wie seine Funktion zu spezifizieren sei, stellt sich in Anbetracht der diskutierten Ansätze vor allem als ein Problem dar. Das zugrundegelegte Korpus umfasst literarische, philosophische und naturkundliche Texte. Diese werden einer Lektüre unterzogen, die unter Rekurs auf systematische Begriffe die Vielschichtigkeit des Gegenstandes auszuloten ermöglicht. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet Descartes' Erklärung des neuzeitlichen Sehverständnisses unter Einbeziehung des Tastvergleichs, den Abschluss Herders ästhetisches Konzept. Der zwischen diesen beiden Kapiteln gespannte historische Bogen umgreift über hundert Jahre, in deren Verlauf sich die Differenz von Sehen und Tasten als diskursiver Bezugspunkt sowohl verfestigt als auch auflöst. Anhand ausgewählter Texte von u.a. Berkeley, Wolff, Brockes, Bodmer, Breitinger, Diderot oder Lessing zeichnet die Studie die wechselnden Konstellationen sowie Medien des Tastsinns nach und zeigt auf, dass dieser bereits seit dem 17. Jahrhundert nicht mehr als Kategorie der leiblichen Präsenz gedacht wird, die es gegenüber dem Sehsinn zu rehabilitieren gelte, sondern in ein komplexeres Reflexionsgefüge eingebunden ist

    Was ist an einem literarischen Text schön, was "vollkommen", "lebendig", "anschaulich"? Inwiefern kann Literatur sinnlich sein? Was bedeutet ästhetische Erfahrung am literarischen Text? Wenn sich in der frühen Neuzeit und besonders im Jahrhundert der Aufklärung Literalität mehr und mehr durchsetzt, stellen sich diese Fragen mit aller Schärfe. Die Aufwertung der Aisthesis und die Entstehung der Ästhetik als einer selbständigen philosophischen Disziplin im 18. Jahrhundert etablieren daher auch - von Bodmer und Breitinger über Baumgarten und Meier bis hin zu Herder - einen ästhetischen Diskurs, der die Sinnlichkeit der Kunst und Literatur zum Gegenstand hat. Sinnlichkeit entfaltet die Literatur in ihrer Anschaulichkeit und in ihrem Rhythmus, ihrer synästhetischen Rezeption und ihrem Nachvollzug, in dem sich eine prägnante, bedeutsame Gestalt herausbildet. Die Präsenzerfahrung ästhetischer Gestaltbildung zeigt sich besonders gut im Modell des Theaters. Denn die Performativität der Aufführung umgreift Produzenten, "Werk" und Rezipienten. Die Theatralität, die in diesem Modell liegt, ist auch eine besonders wichtige und charakteristische Konkretisierung literarischer Sinnlichkeit im 17. und insbesondere im 18. Jahrhundert. In dieser Zeit - das verdeutlichen die Studien an Gryphius, Klopstock, Lessing, Wieland, Herder und Schiller in systematischer Absicht - vollzieht sich sowohl eine Anreicherung der ästhetischen Erfahrung um Konzepte der Sinnlichkeit als auch eine Konzentration auf die spezifische ästhetische Leistungsfähigkeit des Kunstwerks, die für die Kunstauffassung und Hermeneutik der Moderne von ganz grundsätzlicher Bedeutung sind
