    Siegfried Kracauer ist trotz der erfreu-lichen Fortschritte, die die Herausgabe seiner Werke in den letzten Jahren gemacht hat, immer noch weit weni-ger bekannt als viele seiner Zeitgenos-sen. Obwohl seine Theorien und Konzepte in jüngster Zeit zunehmen auf Interesse gestoßen sind, bedarf die Eigenart seines philosophischen Den-kens noch immer der genaueren Auf-arbeitung. Diese Besonderheiten werden freilich erst dann hinreichend sichtbar, wenn Kracauers Werk von seinem Kontext her wahrgenommen und untersucht wird: denn die bestehenden Berüh-rungspunkte mit den philosophischen und ästhetischen Konzepten von Ben-jamin, Adorno, Cassirer, Warburg und anderen werfen einerseits die Frage nach Kracauers Selbständigkeit auf und sind andererseits der Schlüssel für deren Beantwortung. Der Band setzt hier an und versucht, in einer verglei-chenden interdisziplinären Perspektive die internen Strukturen und die spezifi-sche Produktivität von Kracauers Schaffen zu klären. Dabei wird ein Realismus sichtbar, der keineswegs ,wunderlich' ist, wie Adorno mit kriti-schem Akzent noch in den 60er Jah-ren bemerkte, sondern sich durch eine Nähe zu den Phänomenen und eine ungewöhnliche analytische Schärfe gleichermaßen auszeichnet.

Insbesondere die »Zeitungsstadt« Berlin jedoch brachte während der Weimarer Republik einen faszinierenden Fundus an feuilletonistischer Kurzprosa hervor, der die kulturellen Charakteristika der Metropole kennzeichnete. Eike Rautenstrauch untersucht exemplarische, im Feuilleton publizierte Kurzessays von Joseph Roth, Bernard von Brentano und Siegfried Kracauer, die sich anhand von Architekturfigurationen in zeitgenössische Kulturdiskurse einschreiben. Die Synthese von literaturwissenschaftlicher Essayforschung und kulturhistorischer Feuilletonforschung stellt in dieser Form ein methodisches Novum dar.

    The journalist and critic Siegfried Kracauer is best remembered today for his investigations of film and other popular media, and for his seminal influence on Frankfurt School thinkers like Theodor Adorno. Less well known is his earlier work, which offered a seismographic reading of cultural fault lines in Weimar-era Germany, with an eye to the confrontation between religious revival and secular modernity. In this discerning study, historian Harry T. Craver reconstructs and richly contextualizes Kracauer's early output, showing how he embodied the contradictions of modernity and identified the quasi-theological impulses underlying the cultural ferment of the 1920s.

    This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories.Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future

During the Weimar Republic, he established himself as a trenchant theorist of film, culture, and modernity, now often ranked alongside his friends Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno. When he arrived in Manhattan aboard a crowded refugee ship in 1941, however, he was virtually unknown in the United States and had yet to write his best-known books, From Caligari to Hitler and Theory of Film. In this study, Johannes von Moltke details the intricate ways in which the American intellectual and political context shaped Kracauer's seminal contributions to film studies and shows how Kracauer's American writings helped shape the emergent discipline in turn. Through archival sources and detailed readings of Kracauer's work, von Moltke reconstructs what it means to consider Siegfried Kracauer as the New York Intellectual he became when he settled in Manhattan for the last quarter century of his life. Here, he found an institutional home at the MoMA film library, contributed to communications and propaganda research under the aegis of the Rockefeller Foundation, and published in the influential "little magazines" of the New York Intellectuals. Adopting a transatlantic perspective on Kracauer's work, von Moltke demonstrates how he pursued questions that animated contemporary critics from Adorno to Hannah Arendt, from Clement Greenberg to Robert Warshow: questions about the origins of totalitarianism and the authoritarian personality, about high and low culture, about liberalism, democracy, and what it means to be human.     This book explores Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer and Alexander Kluge's analyses of the role that a rejuvenation in the capacity for imagination can play in encouraging us to reconceive the possibilities of the past, the present, and the future outside of the parameters of the status quo. The concept of imagination to which the title of the book refers is not a strictly defined, stable concept, but rather a term which is employed to refer to a capacity that facilitates both an active, creative relationship to one's environment, and a process of mediation between the outside world and one's own experiences and memories.Through a detailed analysis of their engagements with subjects that span a broad range of historical and thematic contexts (including topics as diverse as literature, children's play, film, photography, history, and television) the book charts the extent to which the concept of imagination plays a central role in Benjamin, Kracauer, and Kluge's explorations of a mode of perception and experience which could serve as a catalyst for the creation and sustenance of a desire for a different kind of future.
