    Die Exegese des 1. Johannesbriefes wird weitgehend von der Gegnerfrage dominiert. Allerdings ist nur an zwei Stellen in 1Joh explizit von Gegnern die Rede (2,18-27; 4,1-6). Außerdem ist die Rückfrage nach der Identität der Gegner aus erkenntnistheoretischer Sicht problematisch. Die Arbeit entwirft deshalb in Auseinandersetzung mit Intertextualität, radikalem Konstruktivismus und Niklas Luhmanns Systemtheorie ein neuartiges Textmodell und wendet es auf 1Joh an. Damit legt sie einen neuen Schlüssel für die 1Joh-Auslegung und für das Verständnis von Abgrenzungsprozessen Abgrenzungsphänomen des johanneischen Sinnsystems und damit als eine Strategie der Identitätsbildung aufgefaßt. Das apokalyptische Gegnerszenario und die Leugnung des Christusbekenntnisses sind funktional auf das ethische Hauptthema von 1Joh hingeordnet und spielen auf die im Johannesevangelium breiter entfaltete christologische Auseinandersetzung an. Als Grunddokument christlicher Existenz steht 1Joh gleichberechtigt neben dem Johannesevangelium. Beide Schriften erhellen sich wechselseitig. Damit wird der 1. Johannesbrief aufgewertet. Dies hat nachhaltige Folgen für Predigt und Katechese, wo 1Joh zu Unrecht ein Schattendasein fristet.
