"In American discourse, Japan is routinely imagined as a supernatural entity. Gothic tales from these cultures are exchanged, adapted, and consumed. By analyzing this phenomenon, in texts ranging from those of Lafcadio Hearn to the films of Shimizu Takashi, we can better comprehend the relationship between the two countries as well as the layers of complexity that accompany constructions of foreignness. Specifically, in response to the rise of a "Global Gothic," Blouin interprets these unsettling works to be evidence of a "cosmopolitan Gothic," one that refuses satisfactory enclosure and advocates a turn inward to re-invigorate dialogues upon the world stage"--

"This book provides the first interdisciplinary examination of the popular fiction and film of the 'lost decades' of Japan's Heisei period (1989-2019). Presenting original analysis of major Heisei writers, filmmakers and manga artists, the chapters examine the work of Urasawa Naoki, Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Murakami Haruki, and Shinkai Makoto, among others. Through the work of these cultural figures, the book also explores the struggle to define the history of Heisei - three decades of economic stagnation, social malaise, and natural disaster. In particular, it explores the dissonance between the dominant history of Japan's recent past and the representation of this past in the popular imagination of the period. In so doing, this book argues that traumatic events from the years leading up to Heisei complicate the narration of a cohesive sense of history for the period, requiring works of fiction and film to explore new connections to the past. Incorporating literary and film theory to assess the works of culture, Locating Heisei in Japanese Fiction and Film will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese culture, society and history"

"David Deamer establishes the first ever sustained encounter between Gilles Deleuze's Cinema books and post-war Japanese cinema, by exploring how Japanese films responded to and were transformed by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From the early days of American occupation political censorship through to the social and cultural freedoms of the 1960s and beyond, the book examines how images of the event permeate post-war Japanese cinema. Each chapter begins by focusing upon one of three key themes: taxonomy, history or thought, before going on to explore a broad selection of films from 1945 to the present day, including respected masterpieces (Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon, 1951); popular and cult cinema (Godzilla, 1954; world renowned anime, Akira, 1988); the new wave (Nagisa Oshima's Night and Fog in Japan, 1960); and modern classics (Hideo Nakata's Ring, 1998). The author provides a series of monochrome diagrams to clarify and illustrate the concepts and conceptual components explored within the text, establishing a unique addition to Deleuze and cinema studies"--
