    Das Werk Christoph Martin Wielands erstreckt sich über mehrere Epochen der deutschen Literaturgeschichte rund um die Epochenschwelle am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. Es wurzelt in der Aufklärung und reflektiert im Lauf der Zeit Autoren und Werke aus Sturm und Drang, Weimarer Klassik und Romantik. Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Untersuchung stehen das Spätwerk und dessen Auseinandersetzung mit Autoren der Romantik: den Brüdern Schlegel, Novalis und Tieck sowie den ihnen nahestehenden Autoren Jean Paul und Kleist. Nach einem einleitenden Kapitel zu Ästhetik, Philosophie und Politik im Zeichen dieses Epochenumbruchs werden jeweils ein Werk eines Autors der jungen Generation mit einem des Älteren in Verbindung gebracht und beide im Hinblick auf zentrale, formale und thematische Fragen interpretiert. Damit entsteht erstmals ein umfassendes Bild Wielands und seines Schaffens von 1790 bis zu seinem Tod 1813 in seinen Beziehungen zu den Autoren der Romantik und zu ihren Schriften. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Wieland als reflexiver Spätaufklärer die neuesten Entwicklungen in Ästhetik und Literatur nicht nur zur Kenntnis nimmt, sondern sie für seine eigenen Werke fruchtbar zu machen sucht. Es erhellt so seine besondere Rolle als vermittelnde Person im Literaturbetrieb der Goethezeit.
