    In der Literatur und Ästhetik um 1800 steht »Anmut« nicht nur für Bewegungsschönheit und Ausdruck weiblicher Sittlichkeit. Sie ist, so zeigt dieses Buch, zugleich eine Form der Ästhetisierung und Heroisierung weiblicher Gewalt. Als alternativer Topos zum männlich codierten Erhabenen etabliert sich in Texten wie Schillers »Jungfrau von Orleans« und Kleists »Penthesilea« eine Ästhetik graziöser Kampftänze, die bis zum zeitgenössischen Actionfilm die Inszenierung weiblichen Heldentums prägt. Die anmutige Gewaltästhetik stellt nicht nur eine prekäre Verschränkung bürgerlicher Weiblichkeit mit militärischem Handeln dar, sondern unterläuft zugleich die »doppelte Ästhetik« eines harmonischen Schönen und eines gewaltsamen Erhabenen. Die Aufhebung dieser Dualität steht jedoch nur scheinbar im Widerspruch zu den Theorien des 18. Jahrhunderts - sie ist vielmehr in den Anmutskonzeptionen selbst angelegt und wird zudem durch die Ästhetik der europäischen Fechtkunst vorbereitet. Mit einem diskursanalytischen Verfahren erforscht Mareen van Marwyck die gewaltästhetisierenden und -heroisierenden Mechanismen der Anmut und eröffnet damit eine neue Perspektive auf die Inszenierung weiblichen Heldentums und das Verhältnis von Gewalt und Ästhetik im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert.
