    Die Europäische Union hatte sich im ersten Jahrzehnt des neuen Millenniums vielen Herausforderungen zu stellen. Zwei davon, nämlich die beinahe Verdopplung ihrer Mitgliedschaft und die umfassendste Reform ihrer Grundlagenverträge seit Maastricht, treten in besonderer Weise hervor. Beide Prozesse konnten am Ende bewältigt werden; sie haben sich aber auch gegenseitig in vielerlei Hinsicht negativ beeinflusst und dabei tiefgreifende Konflikte und schwerwiegende Widersprüche hervorgebracht.Das vorliegende Buch analysiert diese negative Dialektik aus der Sicht Polens – des größten Beitrittslandes der Erweiterung 2004. Dabei wird unter anderem deutlich, dass die polnische Regierung und die proeuropäische Opposition in ihren Beitrittskampagnen ein Bild der polnischen EU-Mitgliedschaft zeichneten, das sich am Vertrag von Nizza und dem Beitrittsvertrag orientierte, während gleichzeitig im Konvent zur Zukunft Europas bereits die nächste Integrationsstufe mit einer neuen Machtverteilung vorbereitet wurde. Dieser Widerspruch führte schließlich zur Position "Nizza oder der Tod!" – dem Symbol für die Schwierigkeiten der Vertragsreform im Zeichen der Erweiterung und vice versa
