    Licht hatte in der Kunstgeschichte immer wieder andere Bedeutungen und Funktionen: In mittelalterlichen Fresken standen Lichtstrahlen für die Präsenz des Göttlichen, bei den niederländischen Malern des 17. Jahrhunderts sollte Licht Räumlichkeit erzeugen und Stimmungen vermitteln. Die Impressionisten wollten dann das Licht an sich und sein Spiel auf den Oberflächen der Gegenstände mittels Farbe darstellen. Und Fotografen nutzten Licht – Sonnenlicht oder auch künstliches –, um die Dinge überhaupt sichtbar zu machen. Massimo Mariani, selbst ein Künstler, nimmt die Leser mit auf einen Rundgang durch die Geschichte der Kunst. Anhand zahlreicher Bildbeispiele aus Malerei, Film, Bildhauerei und Architektur erläutert er Phänomene wie Schatten und deren Farbigkeit oder Transparenz und Gegenlicht, die eine geheimnisvolle oder feierliche Stimmung vermitteln sollen. Auch technische Entwicklungen wie die Camera obscura spielen eine Rolle. Daneben stellt Mariani theoretische Ansätze vor, beginnend mit Platon und Aristoteles über Descartes, Newton und Goethe bis zu Chevreul u. v. m.
