    Mit dem neuen Interesse für die kulturellen Kontexte hat die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung auch das literarische Lob als einen Gegenstand wiederentdeckt, der lange als wenig originell und ästhetisch bieder galt. Der vorliegende Sammelband legt einen pragmatisch ausgerichteten, weiten Gattungsbegriff zugrunde und stellt die Panegyrik in ihrer Entwicklung über die Jahrhunderte vor. Er beginnt mit der Antike und führt über Mittelalter und Neuzeit bis ins zwanzigste Jahrhundert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt naturgemäß in der Vormoderne – die Moderne tat sich mit der Gattung schwerer, so dass das Lob z.T. als Schreibintention in anderen Gattungen auswanderte. Die Fallbeispiele stammen aus vielen Ländern Europas und den USA, denn der Band ist aus dem – rar gewordenen – Gespräch zwischen den Philologien entstanden, konkret der gemeinsamen Sektionsarbeit von Germanistik, Romanistik, Anglistik/Amerikanistik und Slavistik während der Jahrestagungen der Görres-Gesellschaft. Der Band lädt ein, ein lange vernachlässigtes Gebiet wiederzuentdecken und sich auf die Suche nach vergessenen Lobesdichtungen zu machen. Zwei der Beiträge gewähren einen Einblick in noch unabgeschlossene Fundgruben
