Das neue Buch von Aleida Assmann reagiert auf diese kritischen Stimmen und nimmt sie zum Anlass, Vergangenheit und Zukunft der deutschen Erinnerungskultur neu zu überdenken. Denn je mehr Zeitzeugen sterben, je weiter die Deutungsmacht der 68er-Generation schwindet und je offener Deutschland sich als Einwanderungsgesellschaft begreift, desto mehr wird auch die etablierte Erinnerung an Verbrechen und Schuld der Deutschen auf einen Prüfstand gestellt. Aleida Assmann nimmt Stellung zu den hiesigen Debatten und richtet dabei auch den Blick auf andere Länder und deren Umgang mit der Vergangenheit – eine Intervention zur richtigen Zeit. „Mit einer Fülle von Institutionen, Initiativen und Museen gedenken die Deutschen vergangener Zeiten.
