    Main description: The circle of like-minded litterati that formed around the poet Stefan George (1868-1933) at the turn of the century represented one of the most outspoken and controversial responses to what at the time was widely seen as the 'crisis' of modernism. The lifestyle it propagated, a mixture of the aesthetic and the heroic, embodied an alternative not only to traditional social forms prevalent during the German Empire but also to established patterns of interpreting art and history. With its thoroughgoing synoptic view of the history of literature and the history of science, the study inquires into the program underlying the cohesion of this literary coterie and the resonances it set up in various sectors of society

    Am Beispiel der Gruppierung um Stefan George (1868–1933) entwirft die Arbeit ein Modell zur Analyse literarischer Vereinigungen in der Moderne, das sich auf sozialgeschichtliche Konzepte ebenso stützt wie auf differenzierungstheoretische und kultursoziologische Entwürfe. Zunächst wird dem Versuch Georges in den neunziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts nachgegangen, gegen die Mechanismen des literarischen Marktes eine Gruppe ästhetizistisch orientierter Künstler um sich zu sammeln. Diese Assoziation um die "Blätter für die Kunst" erweitert ihre Ambitionen am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Kulturkritische Programmatik soll durch die Kreisbildung um den charismatisch ausgezeichneten Lyriker als Lebensform materialisiert werden, eine Alternative zu den überkommenen wilhelminischen Sozial- und Bildungsformen anbieten. Das prominente Feld dieser Konfrontation ist die Wissenschaft. Die 'Krise des Historismus' ermöglicht Freunden Georges eine erstaunliche Breitenwirkung, besonders auch im Bereich der kulturellen und politischen Debatten. Noch im Hitler-Staat lassen sich Spuren solcher oftmals emphatischen Resonanzen finden. Diesen Prozessen geht die Arbeit in einer systematischen Verknüpfung von literatur- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Untersuchungen nach, wobei eine Reihe bislang unbekannter Archivalien herangezogen wird; eine Auswahl ist im Anhang dokumentiert. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dem Konkurrenzverhalten des Kreises, seiner ästhetisch-heroischen Ethik und seiner Kommentierung in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Teilbereichen.
