    In 1215 a young cleric from Friaul composed the first great didactic poem in German on how to lead a life in the world pleasing to God. This work, which marks an important milestone in cultural history, is made available here in extracts for the first time to a wider audience. It provides an unparalleled entry into modes of thought and life in the High Middle Ages. Mit dieser Textauswahl (rd. 5000 von 14700 Versen) wird das erste große Lehrgedicht des Mittelalters über ein Gott wohlgefälliges Leben in dieser Welt zum ersten Mal einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Der Verfasser, ein junger Friauler Kleriker, schrieb es in deutscher Sprache "für vrume rîter, guote vrouwen und wîse phaffen". Die genauen Beobachtungen seiner Umwelt, die vielfach dokumentierten Kenntnisse der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Zustände seiner Zeit sowie sein enzyklopädisches Ausgreifen in viele Wissensgebiete machen das Werk zu einem psychologisch wie kulturhistorisch überaus interessanten Dokument, das wie kein Zweites geeignet ist, in Denk- und Lebensformen des frühen 13. Jahrhunderts einzuführen.
