    Die Studie untersucht aktuelle literarische und kulturelle Figurationen Deutschlands in der Literatur, im Film sowie der öffentlichen Debatte und fragt nach den Mechanismen der Herstellung von Deutschlandbildern, u.a. anhand von Texten von Ingo Schulze, Jenny Erpenbeck, Wolfgang Büscher, Roger Willemsen und Daniel Kehlmann sowie Filmen von Sönke Wortmann und Wolfgang Becker, dem Phänomen der Ostalgie und der Berliner Stadtschloss-Planung. Mit dem Konzept des Imaginären nimmt die Studie die Prozesshaftigkeit der analysierten Deutschlandbilder in den Blick: Das Imaginäre kann als dynamische Struktur der Identifizierung hergeleitet werden. Diese Dynamik wird motiviert durch das Begehren nach Identität, das ihr als unmögliches Versprechen inhärent ist. Das Image, ein Begriff, der bisher selten im Fokus kulturwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen stand, setzt das unerfüllbare Identitätsbegehren kurzfristig in Bilder um. Als temporäre Bildfunktion ermöglicht es das Image, die ökonomische Funktion von Selbstbildern einzubeziehen, denn das Image, das naturalisierend und aufgrund seiner reflexiven Struktur gemeinschaftsbildend arbeitet, ‚verkauft‛ vermeintliche Identitäten. „Insgesamt zeigt Grabbe, „dass Literatur und Film an dem Wir mitwirken“, das sie unter dem Eigennamen und Stichwort Deutschland zusammenfasst. Anzumerken bliebe, dass gerade die thematische Eigenständigkeit der sechs Hauptkapitel mit dem Charakter von Fallstudien eine weitaus stärkere Zusammenbindung hätte erfahren können, als dies durch die theoretische Klammer der Begriffskonzepte erreicht wird. Denn gerade die Frage nach diskursiven Interdependenzen und Interferenzen zwischen den Einzelbeispielen hätte der Untersuchung zusätzliche Attraktivität verliehen. Der Charme von Grabbes Studie besteht nämlich in der Auswahl der unterschiedlichen Untersuchungsgegenstände, anhand derer die Autorin ihre Fragestellung exemplarisch und für das jeweilige Beispiel umfassend bearbeitet“ (www.literaturkritik.de)
