    Wenige andere Topoi haben sich in der langen Geschichte des Künstlertums derart konstant halten können wie die Rede von Genie und Wahnsinn. Spätestens seit dem 18. Jahrhundert wird diese Topologisierung im Künstlerroman thematisiert. Am Beispiel von Karl-Philipp Moritz, Gottfried Keller und Robert Gernhardt rekonstruiert die Studie die Auseinandersetzung der Autoren mit pathologischen Künstlerfiguren. In allen drei Fällen dient diese Auseinandersetzung der Produktion eines psychologischen Wissens, das es erlaubt, den professionellen Künstler vom Dilettanten zu unterscheiden. Was zu einem nivellierenden Gemeinplatz von Genie und Wahnsinn zu werden drohte, lässt sich auf diese Weise als Diagnose einer Persönlichkeitsstörung verwalten.
