    Die Studie liest Thomas Manns Roman "Der Erwählte" als kunstreligiösen Entwurf, der – unter Berücksichtigung psychologischer Religionskritik und unter den Voraussetzungen der gesellschaftspolitischen Probleme im Nachkriegsdeutschland der 1950er Jahre – ein modifi ziertes Christentum konstruiert. Basierend auf einem Vergleich mit Hartmanns von Aue "Gregorius" wird nachvollzogen, wie Mann in Auseinandersetzung mit seinem Prätext Elemente aus zeitgenössischen religionswissenschaftlichen, psychologischen und philosophischen Diskursen synkretistisch in diese Religion, deren Zentrum ihre Humanität ist, aufnimmt. Der Roman wird dabei im Kontext seines Werkzusammenhangs und unter Zuhilfenahme von Selbstaussagen und Egodokumenten des Autors als ein Instrument begriffen, mit dem der späte Thomas Mann seine religiöse Selbstverortung preisgibt und mit dem er zugleich seine kunstreligiöse Selbstinszenierung reguliert. "Der Erwählte" erscheint somit einerseits als positiver, optimistischer Gegenentwurf zum "Doktor Faustus" und andererseits als elementares Mittel der Autohagiographisierung Thomas Manns.
