    Benjamin Constant (1767 - 1830), liberaler Politiker und Theoretiker des Liberalismus, Religionsphilosoph, Literaturkritiker, Romancier und Tagebuchautor, war vielleicht der erste, der die Selbstzerstörung der Aufklärung beobachtete und mit Weitsicht vor ihren Folgen warnte. Schon in seinen Jugendbriefen deckt er die nihilistischen Konsequenzen der aufklärerischen Maschinenmetaphorik auf, und in seinen nach 1800 entstandenen Schriften stellt er fest, dass die Aufklärung die zwangsstaatliche Perversion der politischen Erneuerung von 1789 zwar nicht verursacht, aber mangels historischer Selbstreflexion zugelassen hat. Aufklärungskritik und Zeitkritik konvergieren in Constants Versuch, das eigene Selbst, das Zeitgeschehen und den Zusammenhang zwischen beiden zu verstehen.
