    In ihrem Buch untersucht Andrea Klier zwei Themenbereiche Naturabgüsse und Effigies die zunächst nur die Art ihrer Herstellung gemeinsam zu haben scheinen: Beide gehen auf eine Abformung der Natur zurück. Die Autorin kann in ihrer bildtheoretischen Studie jedoch zeigen, welche gemeinsamen Motivationen diesen künstlerischen Verfahren zu Grunde liegen. Es sind vor allem zwei heterogene Bereiche, in denen im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert der Abguss vorkommt: die Effigies, das auf Totenmasken zurückgehende Wachsbildnis der französischen Könige, das im Totenritual der Monarchie präsentiert wurde, und die Abgüsse von Amphibien und Reptilien, wie sie Andrea Riccio, Wenzel Jamnitzer und Bernard Palissy im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert auf Schreibtisch- und Tafelgerät in Edelmetall und Keramik inszenierten. Bis heute werden diese Werke häufig als kunsthandwerkliche Objekte disqualifiziert. Andrea Klier gelingt es jedoch diese kunstgeschichtliche Missachtung der veristischen Kunst aufzuheben, indem sie diese zum Toten- und Votivkult der Antike und Renaissance in Beziehung setzt und damit erstmals den Aspekt der Bildmagie berücksichtigt. Sie zeigt, wie wenig mechanisch reproduzierende und der Phantasie unterstellte künstlerische Strategien auseinander zu halten sind. Im 16. Jahrhundert kommt der Abguss bei Sujets zur Anwendung, gegenüber denen eine ambivalente Haltung bestand, die tabuisiert waren und deren ästhetische Inszenierung einen Prozess der politischen und persönlichen Vereinheitlichung motiviert.
