    Das gewichtige Handbuch enthält 350 von deutschen Anglisten verfasste Porträts bekannter oder auch weniger bekannter US-amerikanischer Autoren und Autorinnen von der Kolonialzeit bis zur Gegenwart: von "Abish" bis "Yamamoto". Die Auswahl berücksichtigt neben dem Kanon auch der Unterhaltungsliteratur zugerechnete Gattungen wie Detektivroman oder Science-Fiction sowie manche (z.T. unterdrückte oder vergessene) randständige Autoren aus ethnischen und sozialen Minoritäten. Die einzelnen Porträts sind meist werkbiografisch angelegt, lassen jedoch Herkunft und Lebensumstände des/der jeweiligen Autors/Autorin nicht ganz außer Acht. Während die Literaturgeschichte von Martin Schulze (BA 7/99) die historischen Kontinuitäten und Entwicklungen nachzeichnet, setzt das laienverständlich geschriebene, sorgfältig edierte Lexikon andere Akzente und bietet die notwendige Ergänzung.     Das gewichtige Handbuch enthält 350 von deutschen Anglisten verfasste Porträts bekannter oder auch weniger bekannter US-amerikanischer Autoren und Autorinnen von der Kolonialzeit bis zur Gegenwart: von "Abish" bis "Yamamoto". Die Auswahl berücksichtigt neben dem Kanon auch der Unterhaltungsliteratur zugerechnete Gattungen wie Detektivroman oder Science-Fiction sowie manche (z.T. unterdrückte oder vergessene) randständige Autoren aus ethnischen und sozialen Minoritäten. Die einzelnen Porträts sind meist werkbiografisch angelegt, lassen jedoch Herkunft und Lebensumstände des/der jeweiligen Autors/Autorin nicht ganz außer Acht. Während die Literaturgeschichte von Martin Schulze (BA 7/99) die historischen Kontinuitäten und Entwicklungen nachzeichnet, setzt das laienverständlich geschriebene, sorgfältig edierte Lexikon andere Akzente und bietet die notwendige Ergänzung.
