    Der Eindruck, den das voluminöse Werk von Shields (Sachbuchautor) und Salerno (Drehbuchautor und Filmemacher) hinterlässt, ist zwiespältig. Es handelt sich nicht um eine konventionelle monografische Lebensbeschreibung, sondern ähnlich G. Plimpton: "Truman Capotes turbulentes Leben" (ID-G 39/14), um eine "oral biography", wobei die zahlreichen eingesammelten (z.T. redundanten) Stimmen und Äusserungen über Salinger von den Autoren ursprünglich zu einem Dokumentarfilm (2013) verarbeitet worden waren. Immerhin flechten die beiden Autoren - anders als Plimpton - regelmäi︢g eigene Kommentare und Erkenntnisse ein und wagen am Ende auch eine zusammenfassende Interpretation der verletzlichen und tief verletzten Persönlichkeit Salingers. Nichtsdestotrotz hält sich der Ertrag an neuen belastbaren Erkenntnissen in Grenzen. Das Buch schwimmt auf einer Revival-Welle, die durch Spekulationen über weitere bevorstehende Veröffentlichungen aus dem Nachlass Salingers selbst mit angeschoben wird. Für Salinger-Fans ein Leckerbissen, für ein breiteres Publikum eher ergänzend (z.B. zu K. Slawenski: ID-B 51/12) empfohlen. (3)
