    Der an der Columbia Graduate School of Journalism lehrende Autor ist auf die Suche nach den unterschiedlichen Erklärungen und Deutungen von Hitlers radikaler Judenfeindlichkeit und der daraus resultierenden "Endlösung" gegangen. Er hat sich nicht mit Lektüre erreichbarer Bücher und Texte begnügt, sondern auch viele Autoren aufgesucht, mit ihnen diskutiert. Das Ergebnis: ein dickleibiges, durchaus spannend zu lesendes, offenbar im englisch- und französischsprachigen Raum positiv beurteiltes Buch, diskursive Kompilation von Meinungen und Deutungen der Frage nach dem Warum, ohne neuen Historikerstreit zu entfachen; ausländische Historiker werden stärker berücksichtigt als deutsche. Die Forschung sei hier schon weiter, bemerkt K. Hildebrand (ZEIT, 15.04.1999), vieles zu eindimensional gesehen, I. Fetscher (FAZ, 19.04.1999) zur dennoch diskussionswürdigen Studie, deren Lektüre eingehende Kenntnis einschlägiger Literatur bedingt. (3) (Friedrich Andrae)
