    "Spätmittelalterliche Prosaromane erzählen von Liebe und Ehre, von Verleumdung und Verrat. Werke wie 'Fortunatus' und 'Herzog Ernst', 'Melusine', 'Tristrant' oder 'Hug Schapler' greifen dafür auf ältere Geschichten zurück. Die vorliegende Arbeit demonstriert anhand von Handschriften und Drucken des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, wie sich dieser Prozess auf der Ebene der Textgeschichte einzelner Werke wiederholt. Denn Überlieferungsbeteiligte überarbeiten die Texte weiter, kürzen, ergänzen oder untergliedern sie und fügen mit Illustrationen und anderen Paratexten weitere Dimensionen hinzu. Ganz gleich, ob diese Eingriffe semantisch intendiert sind oder ökonomischen Logiken folgen, sie variieren den Sinngehalt der Werke und schreiben aktiv an der Literaturgeschichte mit. Sebastian Speth zeigt, wie im vormodernen Bucherzählen haupt- und paratextuelle sowie strukturelle Dimensionen miteinander konkurrieren und dem historischen Rezipienten ein Spektrum möglicher Perspektiven vorgeben, zwischen denen er bei seiner Lektüre wählen kann. Die Arbeit regt auf diese Weise an, Prosaromane "überlieferungsgerecht" zu interpretieren, das heisst, die Werke in der gleichen Ein- und Vieldeutigkeit ernst zu nehmen, in der sie überliefert sind.)"-- "Premodern narratives create a multiplicity of meaning by juxtaposing principal, paratextual, and structural dimensions.
