"For the past half-century, area studies scholarship has been the principal filter through which scholars, policy makers, journalists, and the general public have organized knowledge about the larger world. The essays presented here deal with diverse issues and contexts but reflect a common interest in reconsidering the political, geographical, and cultural boundaries conventionally observed by area specialists and others. Each highlights the very general theme of cross-cultural interaction and endeavors to put previously separate bodies of scholarship in dialogue with one another. By exploring interactions that have historically linked world regions, the volume contributes to the development of transregional and global historical analysis."--Jacket Regional histories, global processes, cross-cultural interactions / Jerry H. Bentley -- From archaic globalization to international networks, circa 1600-2000 / C.A. Bayly -- Sufi brotherhoods: transcultural / transstate networks in the Muslim world / John W. Voll -- Cotton: a global history / Sven Seckert -- From red crosses to golden arches: China, the Red Cross, and the Hague Peace Conference, 1899-1900 / Caroline Reeves -- Constructing Africa: African American writers before emancipation / Colin Palmer -- Migration control and the globalization of borders: China and the United States, 1898-1911 / Adam McKeown -- Smuggling and its malcontents / Allan L. Karras -- Cartographies of connection: ocean maps as metaphors for interarea history / Kären Wigen -- Chronology, crossroads, and Commonwealths: world-regional schemes and the lessons of Caucasia / Stephen H. Rapp. Jr. -- Regimes of world order: global integration and the production of difference in twentieth-century world history / Charles Bright and Michael Geyer
