    À y bien réfléchir, la montagne est partout, ne serait-ce que sous la forme d'une éminence, qui a le plus souvent présidé à l'origine des villes. On connaît sa puissance sacrée, le rôle symbolique fondamental qu'elle a toujours joué, et l'on devine à quel point elle constitue l'un des éléments essentiels d'un paysage psychique. Or, des certitudes toutes faites peuvent s'écrouler si l'on analyse de façon pluridisciplinaire la production artistique européenne et japonaise depuis le Moyen Âge. La montagne dont il est le plus souvent question est la plus archaïque, c'est-à-dire généralement celle qu'on n'escalade pas, que l'on gravit tout au plus, que l'on contemple surtout : ce qui est visé ici n'est pas la montagne accessible, fût-ce au péril de sa vie, mais celle, plus difficile à appréhender, que le corps ne saurait vaincre. La puissance du décor montagnard est en effet si grande que la notion même de décor se trouve remise en question, que se produit une sorte d'aplatissement entre ce qui paraîtrait relever du détail et ce que l'on considérerait trop hâtivement comme essentiel. Certes, des montagnes célèbres sont ici examinées, mais l'ouvrage que l'on va lire, lorsqu'on en embrasse l'ensemble des contributions, montre bien que les considérations esthétiques sur le paysage montagnard seront toujours ou presque secondes, la plupart de ces nouveaux discours sur la montagne désignant en effet paradoxalement par les attitudes les plus anciennes, sinon les plus primitives, ce que la montagne n'est pas et voudrait donner à voir. Ce qui conduira à constater alors combien l'écart entre l'Europe et le Japon peut parfois se réduire à l'extrême

    La description de vêtements peut occuper dans un roman une place très importante, parfois décisive pour sa signification, et. au théâtre, personne ne niera que les costumes rentrent, à part entière, dans l'esthétique générale d'une pièce. Pourtant, nous ne disposons aujourd'hui que de peu d'études sur ces sujets. Et quand la relation plus extrinsèque que la littérature entretient avec le vêtement, celle du témoignage sur un fait de société ou sur une pratique particulière par exemple, aurait été plus étudiée, c'est à l'évidence d'une manière quelque peu limitée dans le temps comme dans l'espace. C'est ce large cham p d'études peu défriché que cet ouvrage s'emploie sinon à épuiser, du moins à baliser. Il s'organise sous une forme souple, qui a cherché à respecter les chronologies tout en favorisa n t les regroupem ents thém atiques, à concilier de larges études synthétiques et des analyses plus ponctuelles, à équilibrer, enfin, les aires culturelles ainsi que les différentes perspectives critiques. Et, en même tem ps, il décrit une trajectoire qui s'efforce d'approfondir toujours plus les relations qu'entretiennent vêtement et littérature.

Il s’inscrit dans la tradition propre au LAPRIL en témoignant de la nécessaire pluridisciplinarité dans les recherches esthétiques. En effet, autour d’un thème littéraire déterminé, « le paysage romantique », ce cinquante quatrième cahier confronte et coordonne plusieurs approches, sans aucune fermeture méthodologique. C’est cette confrontation et cette coordination recherchées par le LAPRIL depuis sa fondation en 1976 par Claude Gilbert-Dubois qui permet au discours sur l’imaginaire et sur l’art de ne pas demeurer un exercice d’école.
