    Wie hat sich der Brief als Kommunikationsform in den letzten 3.000 Jahren entwickelt? Was hat sich gewandelt? Welche Strukturelemente blieben unverändert? Als Text, als Objekt und als kommunikatives Ereignis lebt der Brief in seiner Wiedererkennbarkeit von Invarianzen, die die Reproduzierbarkeit eines Musters auch unter sich wandelnden kulturellen Bedingungen zu garantieren scheinen. Es ist diese zwischen Formalisierung und Offenheit changierende Textualität, die zum einen das Interesse disziplinär konturierter Fragehorizonte auf sich zieht, die zum anderen aber ohne interdisziplinären Austausch wohl kaum in ihrer Spannbreite ausgemessen werden kann. Die Beiträge des Bandes tragen Bausteine zu einer Kulturgeschichte des Briefs zusammen und reflektieren zugleich die Kontinuitäten, die sich im geschichtlichen Wandel abzeichnen.

    Erzählen ist eine anthropologische Universalie - seine Kultivierung aber lässt sich nur verstehen, wenn man sie als Mediengeschichte begreift. Menschen sind bewusste Wesen und damit genötigt, sich zu ihrem Leben zu verhalten: Sie führen es in einem zukunftsoffenen Horizont, sie formen und deuten es im Rückblick der Erinnerung. Das Erzählen verschränkt diese beiden Perspektiven zum Sinngebilde einer Geschichte. Der Ort, an dem dies normalerweise geschieht, ist das Gespräch. Der »homo narrans« ist ein redendes, kein schreibendes Tier. Das versteht sich bis ins 18. Jahrhundert von selbst. Erst in dieser Umbruchphase der europäischen Kulturgeschichte tritt das Buch in Konkurrenz zur geselligen Unterhaltung. Im Kontext einer mediengestützten Erlebniskultur wird es zum großen Faszinosum, sich aus der Interaktion zurückzuziehen, um fiktiven Wesen in der Imagination nahe zu sein und an ihrem Glück und Leid Anteil zu nehmen. Die einzelnen Studien des Bandes entwerfen eine Anthropologie des Erzählens und verfolgen seine strukturelle Verschriftlichung vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert. Sie behandeln u.a. die Geschichte des kurzweiligen Erzählens, die Medientheorie des Romans, die Entdeckung des narrativen Schreibens im Kontext der Briefkultur, die Novellistik und Romankunst des poetischen Realismus.

    There are few features that characterize the letter, and yet they have contributed to the successful history of this communication form for more than 3000 years: writtenness, materiality, mobility, address, the necessity of transmittal, and the fact that they can be dated and stored. These contributions take different disciplinary perspectives in order to sound out the universal features of letter communication in specific historical conditions. Wie hat sich der Brief als Kommunikationsform in den letzten 3.000 Jahren entwickelt? Was hat sich gewandelt? Welche Strukturelemente blieben unverändert? Als Text, als Objekt und als kommunikatives Ereignis lebt der Brief in seiner Wiedererkennbarkeit von Invarianzen, die die Reproduzierbarkeit eines Musters auch unter sich wandelnden kulturellen Bedingungen zu garantieren scheinen. Es ist diese zwischen Formalisierung und Offenheit changierende Textualität, die zum einen das Interesse disziplinär konturierter Fragehorizonte auf sich zieht, die zum anderen aber ohne interdisziplinären Austausch wohl kaum in ihrer Spannbreite ausgemessen werden kann. Die Beiträge des Bandes tragen Bausteine zu einer Kulturgeschichte des Briefs zusammen und reflektieren zugleich die Kontinuitäten, die sich im geschichtlichen Wandel abzeichnen.

    Erzählen ist eine anthropologische Universalie - seine Kultivierung aber lässt sich nur verstehen, wenn man sie als Mediengeschichte begreift. Menschen sind bewusste Wesen und damit genötigt, sich zu ihrem Leben zu verhalten: Sie führen es in einem zukunftsoffenen Horizont, sie formen und deuten es im Rückblick der Erinnerung. Das Erzählen verschränkt diese beiden Perspektiven zum Sinngebilde einer Geschichte. Der Ort, an dem dies normalerweise geschieht, ist das Gespräch. Der »homo narrans« ist ein redendes, kein schreibendes Tier. Das versteht sich bis ins 18. Jahrhundert von selbst. Erst in dieser Umbruchphase der europäischen Kulturgeschichte tritt das Buch in Konkurrenz zur geselligen Unterhaltung. Im Kontext einer mediengestützten Erlebniskultur wird es zum großen Faszinosum, sich aus der Interaktion zurückzuziehen, um fiktiven Wesen in der Imagination nahe zu sein und an ihrem Glück und Leid Anteil zu nehmen. Die einzelnen Studien des Bandes entwerfen eine Anthropologie des Erzählens und verfolgen seine strukturelle Verschriftlichung vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert. Sie behandeln u.a. die Geschichte des kurzweiligen Erzählens, die Medientheorie des Romans, die Entdeckung des narrativen Schreibens im Kontext der Briefkultur, die Novellistik und Romankunst des poetischen Realismus.

    The 'novel in letters' is regarded as the epitome of sentimentality, yet its forms of expression are actually more nuanced than the typical verdict of literary historians would suggest. Based upon a consideration of the epistemological and media-historical contexts of the epistolary novel, this volume presents illustrative interpretations that reveal the multifaceted richness of this genre. The contours of the history of the epistolary novel are thus traced, allowing us to reassess the relationship between individual texts and the genre as a whole.
