    ger: Das interdisziplinäre Feld der Food Studies hat in den vergangenen Jahren immer weitreichendere Relevanz und wissenschaftliche Präsenz gewonnen. Dennoch ist Essen und dessen Zusammenhang mit Altern und dem Holocaust ein gering beforschtes Gebiet innerhalb der amerikanistischen Literaturwissenschaft. Die Betrachtung sowie Analyse verschiedenster Narrative durch eine räumliche Linse des Essens erlaubt sohin einen Blick in das Leben der fiktionalen Charaktere in ausgewählten Werken Lore Segals und eröffnet eine neue Sichtweise auf die Art, wie die Leser*innenschaft ihre literarischen Texte zu empfinden vermag. Nahrungsmittel schaffen und verändern den Rahmen, in welchem das Leben – oder lediglich gewisse Auszüge davon – zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt betrachtet werden kann. Diese Arbeit widmet sich Lore Segals Werken mit speziellem Fokus auf den Holocaust, gründend auf den persönlichen Erlebnissen Lore Segals im Kontext der Alterswissenschaften. Nahrung kann mehr als bloß Nahrungsmittel sein und Beziehungsräume in fiktionalen Texten auftun, die mehr als bloße Rahmenhandlung einer Geschichte sind. In Segals Werk wird die Literary Foodscape zum roten Faden und spiegelt ihre Erfahrungen durch fiktionale Repräsentationen wider. Gemeinsames Essen und Trinken sowie auch die Räume, die dadurch entstehen, verhelfen den Charakteren dazu, Beziehungen nachhaltig aufzubauen um sich in ihren neuen Umgebungen einzufinden. Sie spielen darüber hinaus eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entstehung eines Heimatgefühles für die weiblichen Charaktere in unterschiedlichen Phasen ihres Lebens. Die Literary Foodscape in Segals fiktionalem Lebensnarrativ entsteht in drei verschiedenen Etappen, welche in dieser Arbeit analysiert werden. Zuerst wird ihre Kindheit im Kontext des Kindertransportes sowie als jüdische Holocaustflüchtige dargestellt. In weiterer Folge widmet sich diese Arbeit ihrer Immigrationserfahrung in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, die durch die Entstehung von Freundschaften und Beziehungen im Kontext von Essen und Essenspraktiken augenscheinlich wird. Im dritten Teil ihrer Erzählungen werden Literary Foodscapes geschaffen, in denen Freundschaften und zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen entstehen, welche ihre Erfahrungen als alte Frau widerspiegeln. eng: The interdisciplinary field of food studies has gained importance in recent years. However, the spatial aspects created through food, and their link to aging and the Holocaust are an under-researched area within literary studies. The way food is shaping and creating spaces that express personal aspects of the authors’ and characters’ lives, at a certain point in time and throughout the life course, allows insight into an individual’s experience. This dissertation will focus on a selection of Lore Segal’s fiction through the lens of Aging Studies, with a specific focus on the Holocaust. As this thesis will show, food is more than a simple sustenance, and a foodscape in literature is more than the spatial backdrop of a story. I am outlining Lore Segal’s life and writing, focusing on her personal history. Segal’s life is ‘emplotted’ and ‘storied’ in the narratives of her own experience. Food and the localities surrounding it are the characters’ means of adjusting in a new community and play a significant role in the formation of new bonds and relationships for the female immigrants, as well as the characters who have finally found a ‘home’ in old age. The literary foodscape in her life course narrative, thus, creates three different ‘stages’ that this thesis focuses on. The first is her childhood in the context of the Kindertransport, as a Jewish refugee from the Holocaust. The second is her searching for a comfortable place in the United States as an immigrant, which is expressed through friendships and relationships. The third stage of Segal’s narratives is represented in her finally finding her place, through lasting friendships and relationships, and comfortable places to dwell in.
