    "In Thomas Pynchons Roman 'Gravity's Rainbow' von 1973 formieren Herero aus der ehemaligen Kolonie Deutsch-Südwestafrika gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs eine Spezialeinheit der SS, die an der Entwicklung der V-2-Rakete beteiligt ist. Diese Fiktion mutet schon deshalb absurd an, weil jenes Volk 1904 von einer deutschen Expeditionsarmee brutal zerschlagen worden war. Doch wer eingehender nach den historischen Fakten fragt, macht bald verblüffende Entdeckungen: Schon vor dem Deutsch-Herero-Krieg hatten Herero Uniformen der deutschen 'Schutztruppe' angezogen, um darin nach preußischem Reglement zu exerzieren. Danach wurden Herero als Offiziersburschen und Polizeidiener Teil des deutschen Herrschaftsapparats. Wenn die Herero heute im unabhängigen Namibia ein eigenständiges Volk darstellen, dann nicht zuletzt dank ihrer 'Truppenspiele'. Zeugt ihre Mimikry nun aber von einer 'Identifikation mit dem Angreifer' oder von antikolonialem Widerstand? / Diese Studie liefert keine literaturwissenschaftliche Deutung von Pynchons Roman.
