This volume explores the politics and poetics of Victorian surfaces in their manifold manifestations. In so doing, it examines various cultural products 'as they are' and highlights the art of surface composition in the Victorian era as well as the socio-cultural ramifications of the preoccupation with the exterior. By closely reading the various surfaces materialising in Victorian literature and culture, the individual contributions explore the dialectics of surface and depth in Victorian (and Neo-Victorian) cultures as well as the legibility of surfaces. They look into the surfaces of literary narratives, paintings, and film but also into natural surfaces such as skin or bark. Each chapter foregrounds what is present rather than absent in a text, while also paying attention to the surfaces that become manifest on the diegetic level of the text, be they cloth, landscapes, or human bodies or faces. This is an open access book

ger: Through British colonisation Aotearoa's Maori population saw itself not only pushed to the fringes of their homeland in geographical, political, demographic and cultural terms they were also confronted with the way prevalent colonial discourse constructed them as the 'childlike indigene', awaiting but never fully acquiring the colonisers' education. The present study argues that in (post-) colonial writing this notion is refuted, also, and especially, by means of employing power- and meaningful child characters; the colonial construct is led ad absurdum and cultural opposition created.
By placing Patricia Grace's novels in the greater context of Maori mythology as well as Maori Renaissance writing it becomes clear to which extent child characters and the presence or absence of their childhoods also serve a political purpose. Often bearing the mark of colonialism the children Grace sketches transcend merely mimetic representations and/or plain nostalgic resuscitation of a seemingly idealised past to become powerful agents of change. They do so by being constructed diametric to prevailing western child conceptions in literature, by opposing their inscribed vulnerability and marginalisation, by advocating and initialising cultural reconsiderations and renewal of cultural practises, and by demonstrating the vitality inherent in Maori societies despite the external socio-cultural and socio-political pressure. Grace's child characters constitute viable images of modern Maori existence also through a revisiting and re-negotiation of past injuries perpetrated against their own childhoods in particular, and the Maori people in general. By creating empowered child characters and outlining meaningful childhoods for them an empowering of their people as a whole is envisaged also as part of a successful process of decolonisation.
