    Es sich schwer machen und dann die Täuschung der Leichtigkeit darüber breiten das ist das Kunststück, welches sie uns zeigen wollen.- Was Nietzsche über die griechischen Künstler und Dichter sagt, trifft auch auf die Arbeit von Schauspielern, Musikern und Übersetzern zu. Sie alle wissen, was es heißt, wenn etwas nach langem Üben und Probieren endlich "stimmt". Gemeinsam ist ihrer Arbeit die Interpretation eines Textes, der sich in einem nachschöpferischen Prozeß in etwas anderes verwandelt: in die Darstellung auf der Bühne, in eine Studioeinspielung, in ein Buch. Dass Sprechkunst und Klangkunst, die stimmliche Darstellung von Texten und musikalische Aufführung sich als Übersetzungen einer Notation in einen zeitlichen Verlauf fassen lassen, leuchtet unmittelbar ein. Die Resultate, greifbar in Tondokumenten, sind Gegenstand der Interpretationsgeschichte, wie die Übersetzungen kanonischer Texte auch. Übersetzer, Musiker und Theaterleute, Musik- und Literaturwissenschaftler, Philosophen und Theologen denken nach über die Unausschöpfbarkeit des Originals und den Weg zur eigenen Interpretation, über den vielfältigen Zwang und die kreative Lücke, über große Verantwortung und kleine Freiheiten. Die HerausgeberinnenGabriele Leupold studierte Slawistik und Germanistik, Übersetzerin aus dem Russischen (u.a. Belyj, Mandelstam, Pasternak, Sorokin, Mamlejew, Schalamow). Für ihre Werke erhielt sie u. a. den Aspekte-Literaturpreis, den Montblanc-Literaturpreis, den Förderungspreis der Bayerischen Akademie der Künste und den Johann-Heinrich-Voß-Preis.Katharina Raabe studierte Musik und Philosophie und betreut als Lektorin das osteuropäische Programm im Suhrkamp Verlag

    The paper investigates the usefulness of quantitative and qualitative indicator variables as forecasting means of industrial production growth in France, Germany, and Italy. The analysis is carried out for two sets of forecasts whose main difference concerns the way in which projections are defined. Forecasts are obtained from simultaneous equations models that generate predictions from the autoregressive processes of indicator variables. In computing root mean squared error statistics and Theil inequality coefficients, the forecasting performance of the leading indicators is compared against forecasts from the autoregressive structure of the reference series. The empirical evidence points to the usefulness of the sampled indicator variables as forecasting instruments of industrial production growth. Dependent on the set of forecasts, satisfactory predictions are available for the short- or medium-run, i.e., for the period of one month or for the horizon of three- to six-months.

    This paper considers the leading indicator properties of quantitative and qualitative variables for France, Germany, and Italy. The analysis employs cross-correlograms to gain a basic understanding as to the lead-lag characteristics of indicator variables. Furthermore, the study qualifies the short-term and long-term linkages between possible indicator variables and the reference series of the business cycle by carrying out bivariate and multivariate Granger-causality tests and by estimating error correction models. The results suggest that the examined indicator variables generally establish a lead over the business cycle, albeit only at short horizons. Cross-country differences prevail as to the direction of the effect of a chosen variable on industrial production.

    The paper investigates the usefulness of quantitative and qualitative indicator variables as forecasting means of industrial production growth in France, Germany, and Italy. The analysis is carried out for two sets of forecasts whose main difference concerns the way in which projections are defined. Forecasts are obtained from simultaneous equations models that generate predictions from the autoregressive processes of indicator variables. In computing root mean squared error statistics and Theil inequality coefficients, the forecasting performance of the leading indicators is compared against forecasts from the autoregressive structure of the reference series. The empirical evidence points to the usefulness of the sampled indicator variables as forecasting instruments of industrial production growth. Dependent on the set of forecasts, satisfactory predictions are available for the short- or medium-run, i.e., for the period of one month or for the horizon of three- to six-months.

    The global hunger indices of 2008 and 2009 (Grebmer et al. 2008, 2009) point to persistently high levels of hunger and food insecurity and a worsening of the situation due to rising crop prices. At the same time, there is a lack of empirical knowledge on the demand- and supply-side determinants of crop prices. Given this situation, this paper estimates structural equation models by means of the three-stage least-squares estimator to identify the sensitivity of the price of three major crops (wheat, maize, and rice) in up to eight countries (India, China, Egypt, Thailand, Ecuador, Uruguay, the United States, and Australia) to global and country-specific crop demand and supply conditions. The evidence suggests that conclusions regarding the determinants of crop prices critically depend on the choice of crop and country. The nonexistence of a consistent and homogenous set of price determinants suggests that the stability and predictability of crop prices depends on country-specific domestic policies that target both the crop demand and supply side.
