ger: Anhand von rund 50 Romanen und Erzählungen soll die Frage beantwortet werden, welche Autoren wie und warum am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts in ihrem Werk antiken Bezug herstellen und wieweit von Postmoderne die Rede sein kann. Je nach dem, welcher Eigenwert der Antike zuerkannt wird, zerfallen die Primärwerke in drei Gruppen: in der Mythos- oder Esoterikgruppe gilt das Altertum als einzigartig und - in seinem Welterklärungsanspruch - allgemein zugleich, d.h. als universell, nicht auf Europa begrenzt und nicht durch andere Kulturräume und Zeiten ersetzbar. Soweit eine Epochen- oder Moderne-Diskussion geführt wird, steht Nietzsche im Hintergrund. Die zweite Gruppe umfasst historische Romane im engeren Sinn: Herrscherportraits (bzw. politische Geschichte) und Künstlerportraits, wobei unter ersteren die entlegenen und romkritischen Themen (Etrusker, Untergang des Abendlandes) stark vertreten sind, so wie auch die Künstler- und Philosophenportraits dem Scheitern großer Entwürfe nachspüren. Lebensphilosophie heisst der gemeinsame Nenner der dritten Gruppe: ihr dienen antike Stoffe als beliebiges, nicht einzigartiges Beispiel, das Altertum erscheint ironisch verfremdet und in etlichen Werken wird bezeichnenderweise der Anspruch auf eine - im platonischen Sinn - reale Welt aporetisch aufgehoben. Ausserhalb dieses Dreierschemas stehen die Trivialstwerke (z.B. oberflächlich ins alte Rom versetzte Krimis), aber auch alle Odysseus-Werke, die ihrer großen Zahl wegen zu einer stofflich definierten Gruppen zusammengefasst wurden und die Dreier-Typologie gewissermassen in sich spiegeln. eng: On the basis of some 50 novels and stories it is elucidated what kind of authors refer to classical antiquity at the end of the 20th century and why they do so, and whether there is a postmodernist fashion. Depending on how great an intrinsic value is given to the concept of antiquity, the works are classified as follows: in the first group entitled "myth and esotericism", antiquity is both unique and universal, it is considered the exclusive path to truth. As far as periodization and modernity are thematic, the reference to Nietzsche is evident. The second group comprises historical novels in a stricter sense, i.e. portraits of rulers (or epochs and political circumstances) or artists, many works of the first of these two subgroups being committed to peripheral topics like the decline of the Empire and the Etruscans and thus gaining an anti-Roman bias, as is the case with the books on artists (philosophers or scientists included), too, which inquire into the failure of their projects. In the third group, classical antiquity is just a repertory of motives which can most aptly be described as "Lebensphilosophie" and, seemingly, it is chosen arbitrarily, it is not seen as something paradigmatic or the foundation of European culture. In several of these works the claim to a "real" world (in Platos terms) is reduced to absurdity. Apart from this trichotomy there are trivial books like detective stories with superficial , and due to their numerousness also the remakes of Homer's Ulysses form a group of their own, which reflects the tripartite scheme in itself.
