    Modern society is driven by electricity usage. I construct a proxy tracing regional economic intensity using electricity usage provided by utility firms in the United States from 1990 to 2020. After comparing electricity usage growth with common regional consumption measures, I find it a leading indicator of the local GDP change and local employment rate in a statistically significant manner. This leading regional economic measure provides a solution to the delays in financial reporting, where a firm’s aggregated electricity usage growth would be able to capture the impact of endogenous regional economic boost or disruption on the firm’s profitability. I document higher electricity usage growth leads to higher EPS and thus positive announcement returns. Despite electricity usage growth does not capture the earnings forecast errors, it provides additional information to improve the accuracy of analysts’ forecasts
