    The record of French cinema's many forays into the Paris suburbs is far more than a prehistory of the 'film de banlieue'. Decades before the emergence--around 1995--of a self-styled 'hood' film in France, filmmakers looked beyond the gates of the City of Light for inspiration and content. In the jumble of spaces surrounding Paris they found an inexhaustible reservoir of forms, landscapes and social types in which to anchor their fictions. Idyllic or menacing, wide-open or claustrophobic, these locales served divergent ideological and aesthetic programmes. From the bourgeois villas and vacant lots of Louis Feuillade's serials of the 1910s and the bucolic watering holes of 1930s poetic realism to the vast post-war housing estates showcased by Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Tati and Maurice Pialat, the gritty noir décors of Jean-Pierre Melville or the sleek, post-modern new towns shot by Éric Rohmer, the Paris suburbs came to form a key site in teh national imaginary. For the first time in English, the fifteen contributors to this volume address key aspects of this long screen history, which intersects with themes central to French cultural modernity, including class conflict, leisure, boredom, alienation and anti-authoritarianism.     Le fantastique, l'a-t-on assez dit, serait de tout temps affaire de spéculation inventive et d'imagination luxuriante, de visions horrifiantes d'une improbable surnature et de figurations fuligineuses d'un intime irreprésentable, seules à même de générer un sentiment d'envoûtement mêlé d'effroi. C'est ce présupposé en forme de poncif critique que la présente étude voudrait, sinon remettre en cause, tout au moins interroger et pondérer par une poétique dite « lettrale » passant le champ concerné au(x) spectre(s) de la lettre. Car, contrairement à ce que tendent à laisser penser des kyrielles d'adaptation cinématographiques (dont certaines au demeurant admirables), les récits fondateurs du genre (Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dracula) sont d'abord et surtout - et ce n'est pas un hasard - d'imposants dispositifs textuels laissant proliférer la lettre et l'écrit dans tous ses états, fût-ce à la faveur d'épiphanies délétères, voire mortifères. En définitive, ce n'est rien de moins qu'une certaine performativité de la lettre fantastique que l'on s'attachera à mettre en lumière, à partir d'un corpus protéiforme (confrontant des époques, des aires linguistiques et des degrés de notoriété très variés) et à travers certains motifs clés : la pseudo-traduction à visée mystificatrice ; les variantes du livre maudit et du manuscrit trouvé ; l'écriture fictive de soi qui vient buter et s'oblitérer sur un impossible je meurs, terme ultime de la lettre (qui) tue.

    Dès sa naissance, parallèlement à son évolution technique, artistique et économique, le cinéma se construit, en tant que concept et instrument d’analyse, dans les discours qui accompagnent son développement. Il constitue un filtre qui permet de poser sur le monde un regard neuf et, dans le domaine des arts notamment, éclaire des formes parfois bien antérieures à son invention. Tel est le principe du cinématisme selon S. M. Eisenstein: « Il semble que tous les arts aient à travers les siècles tendu vers le cinéma. Inversement, le cinéma aide à comprendre leurs méthodes ». Le présent ouvrage, issu d’un colloque tenu à l’Ecole normale supérieure et à l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) en décembre 2010, se donne pour objet l’étude des cinématismes entendus comme l’ensemble des moyens d’interprétation fournis par le 7e art. Centrée sur la littérature, cette réflexion interdisciplinaire envisage d’une part la notion de cinématographicité du texte littéraire et ses enjeux théoriques, d’autre part les discours au fil desquels le cinéma est devenu référent, comparaison ou norme. Elle examine enfin les œuvres dans lesquelles se repèrent, sur le plan de l’inspiration comme du style, les indices d’un cinéma réel ou rêvé.

    Les études visuelles ont transformé le champ des sciences humaines en introduisant de nouvelles perspectives d’analyse interdisciplinaires pour penser la culture visuelle: étude des dispositifs de vision, anthropologie de l’image, intermédialité. Les co-éditeurs de ce volume, Ludovic Cortade (New York University) et Guillaume Soulez (Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3), proposent ainsi un ensemble de contributions novatrices rédigées par des spécialistes de l’écrit et de l’écran permettant de penser les rapports entre le cinéma et la littérature à travers le prisme de la culture visuelle. Sont abordées les relations entre littérature occultiste et lanterne magique, le paradigme visuel chez Stendhal, le role des revues littéraires des années 1910, la visualité dans la poésie moderniste française des années 1920, la mise en page des films dans les collections littéraires, l’origine littéraire du glamour hollywoodien. Étudiées sous cet angle, les oeuvres de Jean Epstein, Marguerite Duras, Roland Barthes, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Marie Etienne, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Spike Lee et Roberto Saviano, ainsi que les « vidéopoèmes » de Jérôme Game, apparaissent aussi comme les révélateurs et les creusets d’une relation évolutive entre littérature et cinéma.Cet ouvrage paraît en complément de Penser l’espace avec le cinéma et la littérature (co-édité par les mêmes auteurs). A partir des oeuvres d’écrivains et réalisateurs, parmi lesquels Emile Zola, Alfred Jarry, Julien Gracq, Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, Marguerite Duras, Ousmane Sembène ou Edouard Glissant, les problématiques abordées dans ce volume inscrivent l’esthétique de la forme et de la réception dans une stratigraphie de méthodes et de concepts associant la géocritique, la poétique, l’esthétique et la géopolitique.     Le fantastique, l’a-t-on assez dit, serait de tout temps affaire de spéculation inventive et d’imagination luxuriante, de visions horrifiantes d’une improbable surnature et de figurations fuligineuses d’un intime irreprésentable, seules à même de générer un sentiment d’envoûtement mêlé d’effroi. C’est ce présupposé en forme de poncif critique que la présente étude voudrait, sinon remettre en cause, tout au moins interroger et pondérer par une poétique dite « lettrale » passant le champ concerné au(x) spectre(s) de la lettre. Car, contrairement à ce que tendent à laisser penser des kyrielles d’adaptation cinématographiques (dont certaines au demeurant admirables), les récits fondateurs du genre (Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dracula) sont d’abord et surtout - et ce n’est pas un hasard - d’imposants dispositifs textuels laissant proliférer la lettre et l’écrit dans tous ses états, fût-ce à la faveur d’épiphanies délétères, voire mortifères. En définitive, ce n’est rien de moins qu’une certaine performativité de la lettre fantastique que l’on s’attachera à mettre en lumière, à partir d’un corpus protéiforme (confrontant des époques, des aires linguistiques et des degrés de notoriété très variés) et à travers certains motifs clés : la pseudo-traduction à visée mystificatrice ; les variantes du livre maudit et du manuscrit trouvé ; l’écriture fictive de soi qui vient buter et s’oblitérer sur un impossible je meurs, terme ultime de la lettre (qui) tue.
