    Le Patient anglais, le film d'Anthony Minghella sorti sur les écrans en mars 1997 et mettant en vedette Ralph Fiennes, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott-Thomas et Juliette Binoche a certainement fait découvrir au public français le dernier roman de Michael Ondaatje publié en 1992. Né au Sri Lanka, éduqué en Angleterre, Ondaatje s'est imposé comme l'un des plus grands auteurs canadiens depuis qu'il a émigré au Canada en 1962. L'apport culturel des immigrés a enrichi considérablement la littérature canadienne d'expression anglaise. Inclassable à cause de sa transgression des genres l'oeuvre ondaatjienne est forte car instable dans son mélange foisonnant et ironique. Ondaatje tisse un grand texte à partir de fils épars multicolores et relate la quête d'un homme déchiré par son désir de transcender son état. Seule la mort donne l'éternité. Ce livre évoque les jeux de masques d'une écriture qui emprunte tous les tons et saisit la richesse d'une diversité volontairement déconstruite dans la bonne tradition de la littérature post-coloniale et post-moderne.

    Les trois rubriques introduites dans ce recueil tentent de refléter les divers champs d'investigation qui s'entrelacent. Sans doute l'interaction entre "les mots et la peinture" (il y a bien discours sur le tableau et/ou tableau dans le discours) donne lieu à un ensemble de communications très homogène tout en faisant appel à un corpus d'œuvres très large. La section "l'image-récit" touche, en fait, à plusieurs types de discours : le discours photographique y est certainement privilégié, puis apparaissent le discours filmique et enfin le discours figuratif de la bande dessinée. Il a paru important de regrouper dans la dernière partie ce que nous avons appelé "l'image-métaphore". Peinture et écriture, image et parole (que la peinture soit enrichissement du langage ou que le texte soit illusion féconde) posent le problème de la représentation de l'indicible ou de l'invisible et visent à transcender le réel. Tous ces textes s'interrogent en fin de compte sur la présentation de deux modes d'expression différents qui semblent impuissants séparément à rendre la perception du réel dans sa complétude et sa totalité mais dont le croisement permet d'atteindre le but impossible, la limite toujours repoussée qui, désormais, n'échappent plus au créateur.

    Ce recueil rassemble des textes sur The Handmaid's Tale, le roman de Margaret Atwood inscrit aux programmes 1999 du CAPES et de l'Agrégation d'anglais, sous la plume des meilleurs spécialistes de la littérature canadienne d'expression anglaise, qu'ils soient en Angleterre, en Australie, au Canada ou en France. Le fil rouge de cet ouvrage est d'analyser les jeux de pouvoir, qu'il s'agisse du pouvoir politique des oppresseurs dans des régimes totalitaires, des théocraties ou des dictatures, ou du pouvoir machiste dans un monde dominé par les hommes et où le corps féminin est aussi enjeu de pouvoir. Certes l'exploitation de la femme, sa démarche de libération, l'écriture du corps tiennent une place centrale dans le roman. Mais c'est plutôt des stratégies narratives et du pouvoir subversif de l'écriture dont nous avons voulu parler. Ainsi les liens entre narratrice et lecteur/lectrice, entre réalité et fiction ont pour principale valeur d'être stratégie de libération. Le jeu des affirmations déconstruites, niées puis reconstruites exprime le combat pour la survie, contre le désarroi et l'oppression. Le seul parcours établi par le texte est bien celui de la démarche de résistance et de libération dans le jeu du pouvoir grâce à la puissance du verbe. La lutte pour le pouvoir a pour corollaires obligés la lutte contre la violence et le combat pour la liberté.
