    Das Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie schlägt in Kooperation mit dem Freiburger Büro Ö-quadrat ein konkretes Verfahren vor, um Stromanbieter und ihre Unternehmensentwicklung anhand ökologischer, ökonomischer, sozialer und kultureller Kriterien einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu bewerten ("Versorger-Test"). Dabei wird der umfassende Anspruch verfolgt, - Verbraucher-Interessen gerecht zu werden, - die Transparenz der Angebote und Anbieter im liberalisierten Strommarkt zu erhöhen, - Stromkunden zum Stromwechsel zu positiv bewerteten Energieunternehmen und gleichzeitig - Stromanbieter zu einer nachhaltigen Unternehmensentwicklung zu animieren und - damit einen Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Energiemärkte zu leisten. Somit greift der "Versorger-Test" die durch die Liberalisierung geschaffene Freiheit der Stromanbieter-Wahl auf. Er unterstützt die Konsumenten-Souveränität der Verbraucher. Gleichzeitig unterstützt er Energieunternehmen auf ihrem Weg zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung und ermöglicht ihnen, ihre ökologische Glaubwürdigkeit unter Beweis zu stellen und ihre Marktchancen entsprechend zu verbessern. The Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy in co-operation with Ö-quadrat in Freiburg put forward a proposal for assessing the corporate sustainability of power retailers ("Versorger-Test"). The assessment of the supply company's strategy and management, its performance and development with respect to environmental, economic, cultural and social criteria aims at - satisfying the interests of final customers, - increasing transparency regarding the quality of offers and suppliers in the liberalised electricity market, - encouraging final customers to switch to positively rated power suppliers, while at the same time - stimulating suppliers to take up a sustainable development, - thereby contributing to a sustainable development of the energy markets. Thus, the "Versorger-Test" takes up the freedom to choose a power supplier created by the liberalisation of the electricity market, and contributes to promoting the customer’s sovereignty. At the same time the assessment supports energy companies on their way to a sustainable development and enables them to prove their ecological credibility, thereby improving their market opportunities.

    Digitisation is not only transforming our society it is also having an impact on the environment: On the one hand, digitisation can improve the state of the environment for example through digitally optimised production processes. On the other hand, negative environmental rebound effects can arise, like a higher demand for internet-enabled products from which an increase in usage of resources and energy during production processes results. With this impulse paper, ⁠UBA⁠ shows where digitisation can create opportunities and challenges for environmental policy. In doing so, UBA aims to help shape digitisation in line with the guiding principle of sustainability.
