    Das Studienfach Deutsch als Fremdsprache/Germanistik erlebt seit einigen Jahren an einer Vielzahl von ausländischen Universitäten eine tiefe Rezession. In diesem Beitrag stellen drei Germanistinnen der East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, USA, ihre erfolgreichen Strategien zur Wiederbelebung eines Germanistikprogramms vor. Die Umwandlung eines traditionellen Germanistikstudiums in ein vielfältiges "German Studies" Programm erfolgte durch die Erweiterung des Lehrangebots mit interdisziplinären und praxisbezogenen Kursen, die Vermittlung von interkulturellen Kompetenzen und "Service-Learning" (Lernen durch Engagement) Aktivitäten.
